Hartman takes over for Mason as Cardinals' golf coach

A new face is at the helm of Medical Lake boy’s golf with Gary Hartman taking over from longtime mentor Jim Mason who retired from teaching and coaching at the conclusion of last school year.

Hartman, who is the district’s maintenance supervisor by day, will have easier numbers to keep track of as turnout is at seven, “Down from the previous years,” he wrote in an email.

The team has two golfers who competed the entire season in 2017, including state qualifier Logan Dianda, a junior, and sophomore Elijah Carroll who joined the team at the end of the season.

Nick Mason, a sophomore, started the season but had to drop out because of driver’s education.

“Cade Palmer, a junior, showed some real skill at the end of the season,” Hartman said. Newcomer Tyler Olsen-Quintos, a junior, is showing some good signs. Two new golfers are a pair of freshman, Jordan Provoncha and Jonathan Veltri.

With the snow finally gone at the Cardinals’ home course at The Fairways, “We our working on irons, drivers, chipping around the greens and lots of putting,” Hartman said.
