The EWU Downtown Student Gallery is a busy place.

The Eastern Washington University Downtown Student Gallery is getting as close to local as possible by showcasing 13 EWU bachelor of arts and bachelor of fine arts studio art major students for the Art Senior Capstone.

The exhibit is called "How to Grow Roses." The work is selected, curated and then installed by the students as a group project. The whole event is part of the professional practice curriculum in the art Senior Capstone course.

"The students are chosen based on the fact that they are enrolled in my capstone course," EWU professor Jenny Hyde said in an email. "Generally these students are BA and BFA Studio Art majors who are seniors."

The exhibit begins April 16, and runs through May 12. There will also be a closing reception that is held on May 10 from 4:30 – 6 p.m.

The artists being showcased are Heidi Bancroft, Steven Bickham, Amelia Burke, Jesse Crooks, Rebekah Curtis, Whitney Evans, Danielle Hanson, Hilary Hartfield, Antonina Lovyn, Roksana Masoumi, Madeline McGinn, Jonathan Stephan and Brandt Wurzer.

"This class focuses on the professional practice of a studio artist, one of the goals of the course is for students to experience organizing, curating and installing an art exhibition," Hyde said. "Generally I am very passionate about art students being professional prepared to manage their art careers. Being an artist means you have to excel at many different skill sets and producing an art exhibition covers many of them."

Following this exhibit, there will be a visual communication design showcase of EWU student talent as well. It will begin on May 17 and run through June 18.

The gallery is located at 404 Second St. and is open on Mondays through Fridays from noon – 5 p.m.
