Cheney's Charles Johnson collected a pair of wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Riverside Invitational, setting a season record in each of 10.87 and 21.84.
Cheney High's boys track and field team ended March with a perfect record by winning a pair of meets last week - including finishing first in the 17-team field at the Riverside Invitational Friday.
The Blackhawks opened with their second Great Northern League dual meet win of the season, a 109-41 trouncing of Clarkston last Wednesday in Cheney, winning 13 of 17 events and placing at least three athletes in the top five in every event.
Charles Johnson collected a pair of wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes while Kevin Houndonougbo, Aidan McCrum and Tucker Cunningham were each first in the 400, 800 and 1,600. Senior Isaiah Rigo won the 400 and 1,600 wheelchair races.
Danny Boyd was first in the 110 hurdles in a season-best 16.41 seconds, with Isaiah Dunn first in the 300 hurdles. Cheney swept all of the places in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
In the field, Jacob McGourin was first in the discus while freshmen Ryan Riekmann and Cole Omlin were first in the javelin and high jump. Omlin captured the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 4 inches.
At Riverside, Cheney easily out-pointed its competition for the win, scoring 145 points. Mt. Spokane was second with 105.5.
Johnson powered to wins in the 100 and 200, setting a season record in each of 10.87 and 21.84. Peyton Putney was third in the 100, with Carson Brown setting a new PR of 22.85 for second in the 200. Brown was third in the 400.
Houndonougbo set a new PR of 2:08.02 for third in the 800, while Bas Holland's PR of 10:21.57 was good for second in the 3,200. Rigo took the 1,600 wheelchair in a season-best 4:28.
The 4x100 team of Putney, Johnson, McGourin and Zach Jongeward was first in 43.66 while the 4x400 team of Brown, Houndonougbo, Dunn and Johnson flew to a first-place time of 3:29.87 - a full 11 seconds faster than second-place Riverside.
McGourin set a new PR of 170-11 for first in the discus, and Riekmann had a new PR of 148-03 for first in the javelin. But of anybody in the field events, it was Omlin who had the best day.
The freshman won the high jump with a leap of 6-04, took first in the triple jump with a PR of 42-9.50 and set another PR of 21-02 for second in the long jump.
Cheney's boys head into the spring break with what amounts to a 4-0 record: winners of their first two invitational meets and holding a 2-0 mark in GNL competition.
Cheney returns to competition Wednesday, April 11, by traveling to West Valley to face the Eagles in a GNL showdown.
