The Cheney High School girls golf team started Great Northern League play on March 22 at Clarkston finishing third overall with a team score of 160. West Valley took first place with 225.

The meet used a modified Stableford scoring system where a birdie was five points, a par was four points, a bogey was three points, a double bogey was two points, a triple bogey was one point and zero points were given for anything beyond a triple.

“This scoring system is only used for the girls and has been a blessing over the past couple years,” head coach Gerald Morton said in an email. “It is only used during league play, during districts, league and state we go back to stroke play. The girls have more fun and are much more successful.”

Junior Katarina Ljubisic was the best finisher for Cheney with 50 strokes. Julia Lupkes from Pullman took first overall with 57. Freshman Halle Sargent was the next Blackhawk with a 34.

“Katarina has put an amazing amount of time in during the off season, getting lessons, hitting on simulators and into her net at home,” Morton said. “The time she has put in has really paid off as her swing looks good and her confidence has helped her with her mental toughness. I also had an amazing freshman surprise turn out this year. Halle Sargent has showed up the first day with some amazing skills and more potential than I have seen in 15 years.”

The lone senior on the team, Hannah Lemelin, finished with 30 strokes while sophomore Ameila Moore had 20 and junior Heather Jones earned 24. Junior Bailey Glennen rounded off the Blackhawks with eight strokes.

“I was very happy with our third-place finish,” Morton said. “With my eyes on a few girls that are improving quickly, my eye is on that second spot.”

The roster for this year’s team includes 17 girls. Six of those girls are freshmen, including Ainsley Glennen, Sydney Owen, Hannah Pieratt, Anna Richardson, Sargent and Avery Stark.

Four sophomores are on the team, including Shelby Draper, Paige Hughes, Moore and Maisie Short. Juniors are another large portion of the squad, featuring six, Melissa Aris, Bailey Glennen, Olivia Grantier, Heather Jones, Ljubisic and Ashlynn Wood.

“I have a great group of girls that seem to really be enjoying each other and the game,” Morton said. “Our two co-captains Katarina Ljubisic and Hannah Lemelin are keeping the team chemistry fun and positive.”

The next tournament for the Blackhawks takes place on Wednesday, April 18 at the Hangman Valley Golf Course. The one home competition of the season will be on April 24 at the Fairways.

“I would love to personally thank the Fairways,” Morton said. “They truly go above and beyond working with the youth of our community. I’m pretty sure you will not find a golf course in Spokane that gives like the Fairways does.”
