Cheney High School’s baseball squad dropped two games last week, including their Great Northern League opener at Clarkston.

Tuesday, the Blackhawks fell 5-2 in a non-league contest at Central Washington Athletic Conference Ephrata. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Cheney tied the score in the fourth on Devin Cook’s leadoff double followed by Luke Martin’s two-out flair single that scored Cook.

A pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the frame helped the Tigers regain the lead, adding another run in the fifth to go up 5-1. Cheney rallied in their last at bat in the seventh, scoring a run an loading the bases with two out before Ephrata relief pitcher Gunnar Falstad got the final out.

Wednesday the Blackhawks were stymied at the plate for the first six innings by Clarkston’s Kory Blunt, who retired 14 straight — including 10 strikeouts — and held Cheney hitless until the seventh. The Bantams scored in the first and the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. But in the top of the sixth, Blunt lost his focus, walking three and hitting two batters to help the Blackhawks tie the score without a hit.

Clarkston used a throwing error and an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-2. Cheney managed another run in the seventh, and sophomore Peyton McPherson’s single broke up the Clarkston no-hit bid.

Cheney (2-2, 0-1) resumed GNL play with a single game at East Valley on Tuesday, and opens the home-part of the schedule Saturday, March 31, with a doubleheader against West Valley, beginning at noon.
