The Cheney High School girls track and field team kicked off their season last Saturday at the Dolphin Invitational at West Valley High School. The Blackhawks placed sixth out of 14 schools with 58 points, .75 points behind fellow Great Northern League opponent East Valley and 22 points behind hosts West Valley in third.
Mount Spokane was first with 107.5 points.
Sophomore Sophia Van Wormer led Cheney with its only first-place finish, setting a new personal record of 11 feet to capture the pole vault. Junior Kaitren Fisher had the highest finish on the track side for the Blackhawks, taking second in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.33 seconds.
Sophomores Maddie Warren, Mackenzie Huotari and Hunter Holsten finished third in their events, Warren in the 200-meter dash in 28.05, Huotari in the 100 hurdles in 18.37 and Holsten the shot put at 32.02. Both Warren and Holsten's marks were new personal bests.
Senior Taishae Wallace was fifth in the discus with a toss of 88-09, with Holsten eighth. Wallace was also fourth in the shot put at 31-08.
Senior Alexis Miller was sixth in the 100 meters in 13.71. Fisher (18.87) and freshman Hannah Davis (19.31 PR) went 8-9 in the 100 hurdles, freshman Sara Graham was ninth in the 400 in 1:07.76 and senior Hannah Spakousky was 10th in the 3,200-meter run in 12:42.30 to wrap up Cheney's top-10 individual finishers.
In the relays, the 4x400 team of Alsatta Bakana, Jolene Whiteley, Megan Habegger and Graham was sixth with a time of 4:37.95.
Both Cheney boys and girls track and field teams opened their Great Northern League season on March 21 with a dual meet at East Valley. The Blackhawks kicked the home portion of the league season off by hosting Clarkston, March 28.
