EWU football players help with PTSO fundraising effort

Medical Lake's Hallett Elementary School's mascot, the Hawks, gave way to that of a pirate, for a night at least.
On Thursday, March 1, for Pirate Family Title 1 Literacy Night, staff and over 600 students and family members came dressed for the occasion and put $850 into school coffers to support student activities throughout the year.
Special guests from the Eastern Washington University football team participated by facilitating the operation of several of the stations.
"They were a big hit, as they fully immersed themselves in this fun of the evening, and the students thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the athletes," event spokesperson Tami Earthman wrote in a news release.
Each station had an activity and a focus which supported the dual themes of the night. Some of the activities were:
• Pirate BINGO where students placed a gold coin on the board when they found the correct word.
• "Will Ye Pirate Ship Sink?" where students created a pirate flag and ship out of foil and tested in out in a bucket of water (a STEM activity).
• "Gems and Gold Treasure Pool" in which students searched for rhyming words in a kiddie pool of brown crumpled paper with the elusive words written on gold and colored gem shaped paper. Once found, students wrote the rhyming words on their sheet in order to gain the desired stamp of approval.
• "Where's Ye Treasure?" Students drew their own treasure map, and then discovered their own pirate name based on the initials of their name.
• A Reader's Theatre was presented by the fourth-grade students entitled "How I Became a Pirate."
• "Pirate Grub" A meal was served complete with Pirate Booty (caramel corn) and hot dogs presented in a schooner with a pirate flag.
The PTSO group organized an auction and 50/50 raffle, for fundraising. There were two door prizes - which were comprised of a cooler, beach towel, movie, book, sand toys, Lego kit and spyglass - all of which were pirate themed.
