It is past time for Congress to take action in gun deaths in the U.S.

Gun violence is one of the leading causes of death in our country and these deaths are preventable.

We get angry and demand those in Congress do something. Truth is, many members of Congress have presented bills, but they go absolutely nowhere in the Republican controlled Congress. Here are a few bills that Republicans refuse to address: a bill to strengthen background checks on gun purchases, a bill to ban assault weapons, a bill to prohibit the sale of bump-stock devices, a bi-partisan bill that would prevent anyone convicted of domestic violence in the military from buying a gun.

The National Rifle Association’s top priority this year is to pass the Share Act, a bill that will remove any regulation on gun silencers.

It is time we take action. Contact your members of Congress and demand they oppose gun silencers being unregulated. Demand they support requiring background checks for all firearm purchases, including all firearms sold at gun shows and on the Internet, prevent known or suspected terrorists from purchasing a gun, and expand data on gun violence by increasing funding to the Center for Disease Control.

Demand they reinstate the federal ban on automatic and semi-automatic assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines. Demand they provide funding to scientific agencies to research the causes of gun violence and develop prevention strategies.

We must demand our senators and representatives put politics aside and pass common-sense gun-laws to help prevent more of these senseless killings.
