The Cheney High School wrestling team lost 40-26 to Medical Lake at home in a non-league match in the final regular season dual of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
“The seniors performed really well,” head coach Brad Rasmussen said. “We are just ready for postseason now.”
Cheney started off strong with Alan Coumbs defeating Nate Stevens by a technical fall, 17-2, at 170 pounds. Boedy Taylor continued the success at 182 pounds by pinning Liam Lonam in 20 seconds.
But Medical Lake seemed to take over as Cheney collected only four more wins on the night.
Cheney’s Teagon Simon (120) defeated Weston Thomas 9-7 while Dylan Straley (126) took a 5-0 decision over Alex Gonzalez.
Zack Nguyen was the one other Blackhawk to earn a pin on the night against Evan Peterson at 138 pounds. The last victory for CHS was at 152 pounds with Anthony Aguilera defeating Brayden Pederson 5-3.
Cheney went on to compete in the North Idaho Rumble tournament, placing 14th out of 21 teams with a team score of 66. There was also a freshman tournament at Rogers, which took some varsity competitors away from the Idaho competition.
“We took half of our team to this huge tournament and had two in the finals with three overall placing,” Rasmussen said. “It was a good showing. We scored more points this year with half the team than we did last year with everybody.”
Highlighting the tournament was Taylor earning first place in his 182 weight bracket after defeating opponents from West Valley, Capital, Timberlake and Moscow. Taylor won by pin in three of the four matches.
Another placer for the Blackhawks was Nguyen, earning second place in the 138-pound bracket. Nguyen defeated athletes from Timberlake, Capital, Lakeland and Lewiston before falling against Cade Krishnek from Capital in the championship match.
The one other medalist for Cheney was Coumbs, taking home sixth in competition at 170 pounds. Coumbs won his first three matches over Kellogg and Capital along with receiving a bye. In the next two matches, Coumbs fell to athletes from Sandpoint and Timberlake. In the fifth place match, Curtis Johnson from Lakeland pinned Coumbs in 4:07.
At the freshman tournament at Rogers High School, the Blackhawks took second overall.
“The freshman took second out of all the Spokane teams,” Rasmussen said. “It was a good day for our future in wrestling.”
The Blackhawks will now compete at the district tournament this weekend with 24 participants on Feb. 2-3 at Mead High School.
