Cheney High School gymnastics soared at their last meet on Jan. 17, taking first place overall as a team with 158.750 points. Shadle Park High School hosted the meet with Lewis and Clark, Rogers and North Central also participating.

“The girls had a great meet,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “This meet was a great way to end the regular GSL regular season. The girls did an awesome job modifying their floor routines to accommodate tumbling on wrestling mats instead of a spring floor. Some of our top bar athletes did a wonderful job adjusting last minute to a set of bars that were very old and did not set to our athlete’s settings.”

Sophia VanWormer placed first in the bars for the fifth week in a row with a score of 9.05. On the vault, the sophomore took second with 8.30. She also received first on the beam (9.325) and floor (8.50) which translated into her earning the title for the all-around score with 35.175.

Alexis Miller took third place in the all-around scores with 32.70. To achieve that mark, she placed third on the vault (8.20) and floor (8.20), second on beam (8.60) and fifth on the bars.

Another top finisher for the Blackhawks was Laia Vidal on the bars and beam, taking fourth in both events. She ended up earning fourth in the all-around scores with 31.175.

The other top-10 performance was by Kyli Mayhew, taking fifth on the beam and sixth in the all-around score.

Cheney had a little time off before traveling to districts this weekend, Jan. 26-27 in the Tri-Cities.

“I look forward to competing in Tri-Cities next week at our districts/sub regional meet which is our first post season competition,” Frucci said.
