From the Archives: 1998 Brittany Kendall, a second-grader at Salnave Elementary, decided to donate to the district's technology levy. She gave $1 in a hand-decorated envelope to Phil Snowdon, superintendent of Cheney schools. She listened to her teachers talk about new computers they would get if they could raise the money. She said she had $2 left over from McDonalds, and donated half of that.

Medical Lake Police Chief Tony Harbolt announced his resignation from his five-year run as chief of the city police force.

The Medical Lake PTSO was celebrating its 10th year of its annual district carnival and auction at Medical Lake Elementary School. It was the organization's one big fundraiser for the school for the year.

Cheney wrestler Cameron Schlotter captured the 160-pound Schoolboy Division Championship at the Oregon Wrestling Classic held in Redmond, Ore. Schlotter went undefeated, winning four matches.

Jan. 29, 1998

The Cheney School District was asking voters to approve a two-year maintenance and operation levy (M&O) to find school programs during the 1999 and 2000 school years. The levy provided collection of almost $3.9 million in 1999 and slightly more than $4 million in the following year.


Nathan LaFayette began work as the new director of the Cheney Chamber of Commerce.

The Cheney City Council voted 5-2 to approve a budget adjustment that cut $145,140 out of the city's general fund expenses.

Jan. 28, 1988

Henrietta and Harry Wilkes of Medical Lake had been honored as the city's "Volunteer's of the Year."

Two brothers were found not guilty of assaulting a Cheney police officer, with the jury's verdict apparently clearing the way for a lawsuit to be filed against the city. Their lawyer said he would add the charge of malicious prosecution stemming from the assault charges the city brought against the brothers.

Construction was scheduled to begin on the first of three phase of a $17.5 million project at Eastern Washington University that would include an addition and remodeling of EWU's science building.

Jan. 27, 1978

Medical Lake City Council approved a plan calling for $100,000 worth of improvements to Waterfront Park.

It seemed highly likely that the state department of Social and Health Services would not be location a group home for juvenile delinquents in Cheney.

Jan. 25, 1968

An organizational meeting of a "McCarthy for President" group was held in the Student Union Building on Eastern Washington State College's campus.

The boards of trustees of each institution would consider possible new names for three of Washington's four state colleges. It had been suggested that the three be named for something other than the area where they were located.

EWSC winter quarter enrollment was 4,812, an increase of 822 students over the previous year's count.

The Cheney Blackhawk basketball team worked itself into a first-place tie by defeating Colville. Leading scorers were Les Harris with 18 points and Gary Sooy with 16.
