EWU doubleheader basketball game against Idaho brought out the crowd

Crunch Time

January 18, 2018

Last Friday, Jan. 12, I attended the doubleheader basketball games at Eastern Washington University with the visiting University of Idaho Vandals. The women’s team started their game at 5 p.m. with the men’s following 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.

I think hosting the two games together on the same night seemed to do the trick on making a lot of people come out to enjoy some fun basketball games in Cheney. By the time the men’s game rolled around, there were no empty seats left in the student section and the rest of Reese Court seemed to be almost full.

I think it did help that EWU and Idaho have a good rivalry in basketball and it made people want to come out to watch the action. But having the option of going to two basketball games for the price of one also has to be enticing to those on the fence about going to the Big Sky competition.

You also have to respect the decent sized crowd that traveled from Moscow to watch the Big Sky match up as well. It brought another element to the competition and made it seem like this doubleheader event was an annual thing instead of it being the inaugural game.

The women’s team put up a good fight against the Vandals and won 71-64. The game was overall exciting and fun to watch as it was a close competition for most of the four quarters of play. Senior Delaney Hodgins of course led the team in scoring with 19 points, while also recording a double-double by adding on 12 rebounds.

After the women’s game, the men started warming up and the fans still kept trickling in. Even though the men ended up losing 58-51, it was a fun back-and-forth game to watch and it seemed to keep everyone’s interest.

Senior Bodgan Bliznyuk was the leading scorer with 14 points and also collected six rebounds, four assists and two steals. I think he is just such a fun athlete to watch play basketball and I hope everybody else in attendance appreciated his performance too.

After seeing the crowd show up for these pair of games, it made me think how I wish that many people showed up to every game for the Eagles. I know I don’t make it to as many games as I would like to, but I was reminded how it is a fun and cheap way to find entertainment just around the corner here in Cheney.

EWU has both a solid men’s and women’s basketball team and I think it is good to go out and support the them in Reese Court. In my opinion, college basketball is one of the most fun sports to watch. I mean there is a reason why there is a whole month dedicated to the sport.

I just hope that all the people that came out to watch two good games of basketball will continue to come back and support the Eagles down the road. And everyone will have a chance to attend a basketball game as there is one almost every Thursday and Saturday until March 3.
