Christmas tree disposal not free

The Spokane County Regional Solid Waste System wants residents to know that it does not dispose of Christmas trees for free at regional transfer stations or at the Waste to Energy facility on Geiger Boulevard. Some news reports on Dec. 28 indicated that free disposal was available.

According to a news release, residents may take their tree to any of the transfer stations in the Spokane Valley or in north Spokane county or the Geiger Boulevard facility for disposal. Trees must be completely stripped of lights, ornaments and tinsel in order for it to qualify as “clean green.”

Trees should be no taller/longer than six-feet and the trunk/branches less than 3 inches in diameter so it will fit in the wood chipper. There is a minimum charge of $7 for the first 280 pounds of clean green disposal at the Spokane Valley and North transfer stations.

At the Waste-to-Energy facility, the cost for self-hauled clean green is a minimum of $5.61 per vehicle, or $52.70 per ton.
