An unattended train idled near the Cheney Rodeo Grounds for five days. The exhaust caused respiratory irritation among residents in the area.

West Plains Fitness premiered as the area's locally owned and operated health club. The new gym was located at 1515 South Technology Road off of Highway 2 in Airway Heights.

Griffon Jones provided the offensive spark as the Cheney Blackhawks defeated Wahluke 72-45 and Fife 56-45 to win the championship of the Blackhawk Tournament.

Amy Jo Sooy began her four-year term as Cheney mayor with some daunting budget challenges facing her.

Ten Cheney Future Farmers of America (FFA) members were among the approximately 50,000 other members at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

The company that planned to build a Cheney housing development called Paradise Estates along the railroad tracks and Betz Road was forced to sell the unfinished development to the highest bidder. Gary and Sons Construction, the site's owner and developer, was not able to keep up with the annual title payment to American Title Insurance Co.

Jan. 7, 1988

Jean Crabb retired as the head secretary at Cheney High School after being on the job for 19 years.

The city of Medical Lake was preparing a skating rink at Pioneer Park that would be open to the public. Del Ray, who lived next to the park, had been helping out with flooding and misting the ice at all hours to create the best possible surface.

A Tacoma man was killed when the U.S. Postal Service truck he was driving struck the rear of another truck just west of the Tyler exit on Interstate 90. One of the trailers being pulled was torn open and scattered mail between the lanes of the freeway.

Jan. 6, 1978

Cheney Police Chief Jerome Gardner was offered a once in a lifetime experience in the law enforcement community to attend the winter session of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy.

Proponents of local water development seemed to have won a decisive victory over those favoring Cheney's participation in the West Plains Water System. There were revelations at the City Council meeting that water availability in the West Salnave area may be in even greater abundance than expected.

Medical Lake was waiting for federal funding to help provide resources for the city's Town Hall project.

50 Years Ago

Jan. 4, 1968

Larry Crandall was the first place winner in the residential Christmas lighting contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and Cheney merchants in cooperation with Eastern Days.

There was an increase in rates for all classes of mail except parcel post and international mail. The new rates were 6 cents for first class mail and 10 cents for airmail.

The board of directors of the Cheney School District placed an $11.95 million special levy before the voters. The purpose of the levy was to maintain the present quality of the educational program.
