WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

EWU women have busy days ahead

Eastern Washington’s women’s basketball team earned a split in games last week losing 81-40 to No. 10 Oregon of the Pac-12 on Nov. 21 before topping Utah Valley State 61-41 at home Nov. 25.

The Eagles now prep for a quick road trip to Spokane tonight (Nov. 30) to meet rival Gonzaga in a 6 p.m. tip. That begins a four games in 12-day span where Eastern is home Dec. 3 against Boise State (1:05 p.m.), Multnomah on Dec. 8 at 11:05 a.m. and Cal Poly on Dec. 11 at 6:05 p.m.

In the Utah Valley victory Eastern shot 57 percent (16 of 28) in the second half, including a 30 percent clip from 3-point range.

Delaney Hodgins led the team with 24 points and was one rebound short of her third double-double of the season. Symone Starks had a season-high 15 points.

“Delaney took great shots,” Eastern head coach Wendy Schuller said. “She rebounded for us and found ways to get in the lane and get some baskets.

Eastern improves to 2-3 on the year, while Utah Valley drops to 0-5. EWU remains unbeaten against Utah Valley and are now 6-0 all-time against the Wolverines.

At Eugene versus the Oregon, Eastern struggled from field goal range, only shooting 30 percent while the Ducks shot a red-hot 58 percent.

The Eagles were led offensively by Hodgins and Violet Kapri Morrow who had eight points apiece.

“Oregon deserves a ton of credit, they are a great team,” Schuller said. “They have phenomenal kids and are just huge.”

TRACK & FIELD

EWU track signs shot, discus athlete

Hadassah Ward from Gig Harbor High School has signed a letter of intent to attend Eastern Washington University and join the track and field program as a thrower in the 2018-19 school year, EWU announced Nov. 17.

Ward is a two-time 3A state champion in the shot put with one more year left to compete in high school. Her personal-best is 44 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the shot put and 134-3 in the discus. She just finished playing right side hitter on the high school’s volleyball team that placed seventh in the state.

“I am very excited to have signed Hadassah Ward,” women’s head coach Marcia Mecklenburg said. “It is great to add another thrower to our group with the credentials that Hadassah has. She will join our team next fall with throwing experience in the shot put, discus, hammer and weight throw. You don’t find a lot of high school athletes having thrown that many events at that high of a level.”

TRACK & FIELD

EWU to host USA Track & Field

Masters Track event in July 2018

The USA Track & Field (USATF) Masters Outdoor Championships are returning to Cheney in the summer of 2018.

Taking place at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field, July 26-29, the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships includes track events, race walking and men’s and women’s outdoor pentathlons.

Nearly 1,000 competitors and 1,500 spectators will bring nearly $2 million in economic impact to the local economy.

The area has a long history hosting running events but these championships are extra special, bringing an inspiring atmosphere as well as athletes with unique and compelling backgrounds. The youngest competitors will be 30 years old, but expect athletes in their 80s, 90s and possibly one-hundreds. In 2017, this event had a 102-year-old competitor.

There are no qualifying standards for USATF Masters Championships. Anyone can compete who meets the minimum age of 30.
