Cheney football closes out season with a 28-7 loss to Pullman

The Cheney High School Blackhawks ended their season with a tough loss 28-7 to Pullman (4-3, 2-1) on Senior Night, Oct. 20. The loss brought Cheney’s overall record to 0-8 on the year and 0-4 in the Great Northern League.

In the first quarter, neither team was able to score, but Cheney’s defense had some sparks throughout the 12 minutes. Jacob McGourin recorded two sacks and Jalen Philips made an interception on a Pullman third and goal play with three minutes left to keep the Greyhounds from scoring.

Going into the second quarter, Pullman scored with a 13-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Jed Byers to make it 7-0 with seven minutes left in the half. A few minutes later, Byers threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Strong to extend the Greyhound’s lead to 14-0.

Down 14-0 in the third quarter, the Blackhawks got on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run from senior Charles Johnson. With a successful point after touchdown, CHS was down only 14-7.

After Cheney’s score, the Greyhounds responded with a 16-yard rushing touchdown from Byers to make the score 21-7 going into the fourth quarter.

The last score of the game came from a 36-yard running touchdown from James Pitzer with six minutes left in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Greyhounds.

With not winning any league games this year, Cheney has not won a GNL game since Oct. 30, 2015, which was the same year the team went on to compete in the playoffs.

There is also a possibility that the Blackhawks would have one final game in Ellensburg on Nov. 3. The decision was not final at press time.
