Cheney's Elizabeth Williams braces for the starter's horn to begin the 100-yard backstroke in last Thursday's double-dual meet with visiting Prosser and Grandview.

The Cheney High girls swimming team wrapped up their regular season last week; sweeping visiting Prosser and Grandview in a double-dual meet last Thursday at Eastern Washington University's pool, and then falling in the season-finale Saturday at Pullman.

The Blackhawks beat the Mustangs 116-46 and Grandview 110-47 on Senior Day. Cheney's 110-60 loss to the Greyhounds gave them a 3-2 record in meet action in the Central Washington Athletic Conference/Great Northern League standings.

Cheney notched nine first-place finishes last Thursday, including three events where they placed in the top three; beginning with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle by Madison O'Callaghan, Logan Krantz and Emma West respectively. Courtney Hanson had a pair of firsts, winning the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 38.02 seconds, with Juliet Richards in second, and the 100 freestyle in 1:03.97, followed by senior Hannah Rigo in second and West in third.

Echo Mecklenburg led the final 1-2-3 finish for the Blackhawks, touching the wall in 28.7 seconds to win the 50 freestyle. Abby Wood finished second and Hope Zaragoza was third.

Elizabeth Williams was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:14.98, while Richards won the 500 freestyle in 6:21.61. Williams also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:11.15, Zaragoza finishing third. Zaragoza also took third in the 100 breaststroke to conclude Cheney's individual events.

Cheney captured all three relays. Zaragoza, Williams, Hanson and Wood were first in the 200 medley, Williams, Hanson, Wood and Richards won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.12 with Evarosa Perry, Zaragoza, West and Richards capturing the 400 freestyle.

Williams, Richards and the 400 relay team posted wins at Pullman. Williams captured the 200 freestyle in 2:18.24, with Richards first in the 500 freestyle in 6:11.63 and the team of Richards, Mecklenburg, Williams and Hanson first in the 400 in 4:18.72.

Second-place finishes went to Hanson in the 100 freestyle and Williams in the 100 breaststroke. Third-place finishes went to Perry in the 200 IM, Hanson in the 100 butterfly and Wood in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.

The 200 medley team of Mecklenburg, Williams, Hanson and Wood was second with the 200 freestyle team of Rigo, Wood, Potter and Richards also second.

Blackhawks head coach Jennifer Hochwalt was happy with the way her team competed last week, especially Saturday. Cheney was short several swimmers at Pullman due to some minor injuries, forcing a few changes.

"I didn't really want to push too much with districts coming up, so I put them in alternative events," Hochwalt said.

Cheney finishes third in the CWAC/GNL league standings behind Ellensburg and league champion Pullman, and is 4-3 overall. The Blackhawks will take 19 swimmers to district competition this Friday and Saturday in Moses Lake.

"We're doing good," Hochwalt said. "We're right on track to swim Friday."
