Police ask public to be aware of suspicious person at Salnave Park

Cheney police are asking the public to be on the look out for a suspicious individual who approached several young women at Salnave Park Tuesday evening, Oct. 17.

According to an email from Capt. Rick Beghtol, police received a report between 5-6 p.m. Tuesday from a citizen who noticed a male in his 30s with brown to black hair wearing baggy clothes going back and forth between the restrooms at Salnave Park and a vehicle in the parking lot. The woman was concerned because of the activity and the presence of young children playing soccer on the field.

The man was seen going into both the men’s and the women’s restrooms, including the latter when there were two young girls inside. When confronted, the man first said he worked for the city of Cheney and pretended to unlock a supply room door in the restroom building.

The woman also reported the man pretended to be talking on a cellphone once he realized he was being watched. She described the vehicle he was getting in and out of as a 1990s model Mazda of unknown color but with teal green trim.

“Of course anyone seeing suspicious behavior at any location throughout the city, but more particularly in our parks are encouraged to call the police immediately,” Beghtol said in the email.

Beghtol can be contacted at rbeghtol@cityofcheney.org or at 498.9282. The department is located at 215 G. St. The department phone number is 535-9233.
