SCOPE releases names of volunteer of the year winners

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has announced that Darwin McKibbins and Ken Dickson have been named as recipients of the Sheriff’s Community Oriented Police Effort (SCOPE) volunteers of the year award at their respective stations.

McKibbins has been a volunteer at the Cheney/EWU SCOPE office since 2016 after moving to the city from West Valley where he began with SCOPE in 2014. Before joining, he lived in a secluded rural area where he experienced problems with illegal dumping and cars parked in strange areas during the day.

This year, McKibbins recruited his wife and two additional volunteers as new SCOPE volunteers.

Dickson joined SCOPE in April 2017. He volunteers for services such as C.O.P., school patrols, radar, Operation Family ID and obtained a limited commission, allowing him to conduct disabled parking enforcement and much more.

SRTC hosts open house on Horizon 2040 plan

The Spokane Regional Transportation Council (SRTC) is inviting the public to talk about the future of transportation in the region. The council will host a public open house on the Horizon 2040 plan on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 4–6 p.m. at SRTC offices, 421 W. Riverside, Suite 504 in the Paulsen Center Building.

Specifically being looked at are projections (population, enforcement, demand on the transportation system, etc.) over the next two decades, strategies for addressing problem areas in the area transportation system along with transportation projects and programs proposed to be constructed or built by 2040.

Also examined is a financial plan that demonstrates funding will be reasonably available to pay for those projects and programs, and performance measures to help determine if Horizon 2040 is helping to achieve an efficient and safe transportation system.

SRTC encourages the public to attend and provide feedback on the Horizon 2040 plan. The plan is available for public review and comment through Nov. 12. It can be viewed at http://www.srtc.org or by contacting SRTC at (509) 343-6370 for a hardcopy.

Comments can be submitted by emailing contact.srtc@srtc.org mailing to SRTC at 421 W. Riverside, Suite 500 Spokane, WA 99201 or by calling the number above.

Make Halloween a little less frightening for your pets

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services is reminding pet owners that Halloween can be a frightening time for animals. Sudden noises and strange-looking costumes can spook pets, causing them to bolt through the open door.

The best idea is to always adorn your pet with a collar and identification tag, along with micro-chipping them. In addition, pet owners can take additional precautions by gauging your pet’s typical reaction while greeting visitors and decide if putting up a baby gate or leaving your dog or cat in a back room of the house would keep them calmer throughout the evening.

Also, glow sticks can be punctured or broken open very easily by pets. The chemical inside isn’t toxic but can make your pet very sick. If dressing your pet up, the garb should not constrict their movement or hearing, or impede the ability to breathe, bark or meow.

Chocolate in all forms can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems.

A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire.

SCRAPS will be hosting its annual “Howliween Pawty” on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 1 – 3 p.m. The pet parade begins at 2 p.m. with prizes for people and the pets. Kids games, treats and a SCRAPS Rescue Room for adults (like an escape room) are part of the fun.
