EWU volleyball goes winless against ISU, Idaho

Eastern Washington University’s volleyball team lost a pair of 3-1 matches last week, first to visiting Idaho State and on the road in Moscow against Idaho.

Against the Vandals (7-1 Big Sky, 12-7 overall), the Eagles jumped off to a 1-0 lead on a 25-21 opening set win but lost the next three 25-18, 25-17 and 25-23.

Eastern had three players in the double-digits for kills. MaKenna Davis and Taylor Larsen each had 13, followed by Kahle Elliot with 11. Megan LaFond led in digs with 19 while Regan Harr dished out 23 assists. One of the younger players that stepped up for Eastern was the freshman Davis, who set a career-high with eight kills in the first set.

The Eagles (3-5, 6-11) fell into a 2-0 hole versus the Bengals (5-3 , 8-13) Oct. 12 at Reese Court, rebounded for a third-set victory but lost the match 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21.

Ashley Seiler led all players with 18 kills and also led the team with two aces. Jayde Robertsen and Chloe Weber paced Eastern with four blocks. Harr dished out 29 assists, while LaFond had 22 digs.

Eastern returns home for two matches, but they play host to the two top teams in the Big Sky south division in Portland State (6-2, 15-5) on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. and Sacramento State (8-0, 17-7) Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. Admission to EWU volleyball is free.

EWU cross country finishes strong at pre-national invite

The Eastern Washington University cross country teams finished their regular season with the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 14. There were also three Eagles for the men competing in the Inland Empire Championships in Lewiston, Idaho.

At the Pre-National, sophomore Colton Johnson finished in 76th with a time of 24 minutes, 19.2 seconds in the 8,000-meter course on the men’s side out of 282 racers. This marked the fourth meet in a row that the sophomore had finished in the top spot for the men.

For the women, senior Kari Hamilton placed 128th with a time of 21:29.7 in the 6,000-meter course.

At the Inland Empire, Evan Sanford finished in the top spot for EWU, placing 91st with a time of 26:51.0. Rounding off the Eagles was Miguel Vargas in 116th, completing the course in 27:42.6.

The Eagles will now prepare for the Big Sky Championships, which will be held in Ogden, Utah, with host Weber State on Oct. 28.
