The Cheney Blackhawks fell to the undefeated West Valley Eagles 41-7 on Friday, Oct. 13. With this loss, CHS falls to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the Great Northern League.
“Aside from starting slow, we drove the field at times and looked good,” head coach Bobby Byrd said. “Letting them score that much didn’t put us in a position to be successful, but we only held them to seven points in the second half.”
The Eagles were able to get on the board a couple times in the first quarter as Collin Sather ran for a nine-yard touchdown and quarterback Blake Transue threw a 66-yard touchdown strike also to Sather, giving West Valley an early 14-0 lead.
WVHS kept rolling in the second quarter as Transue threw three touchdown passes to Connor Whitney to push the Eagles’ lead to 34-0 at the half.
The Blackhawks eventually scored when running back Charles Johnson ran an 83-yard touchdown in the third quarter, making the score 34-7.
In the fourth quarter, CHS had a spark as Tayvin Ewen made an interception on Cheney’s 47-yard line to bring the Eagles’ drive to a halt.
“A kid who stood out was Luke Martin,” Byrd added. “He had a great game and season overall. He runs good routes, has soft hands and does good blocking.”
But West Valley went on to seal their win when they scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Marshall Meleney.
Cheney will close out their season at home against the Pullman Greyhounds (3-3, 1-1) tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 20, for Senior Night. Pullman will be coming off a 31-10 loss against West Valley-Yakima.
“This is the last opportunity for these seniors to get a win in the GNL,” Byrd said. “These seniors have done a good job ast setting good examples. They have changed this program for the better. We will prepare the best we can for the game and send these guys out on a good note.”
Nineteen seniors from the football team will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff at Tom Oswald Field.
“I look forward to seeing this group of seniors together on Oswald field for one last time,” Byrd added. “I truly appreciate these guys and I will try my best to prepare them for the last game.”
