Suominen named National Merit Scholarship Commendable Student

Senior has been to national Future Business Leaders of America competition twice, won state championship in "Organizational Leadership"

Photo by John McCallum Cheney High senior Rachel Suominen placed in the top 50,000 of 1.6 million students nationall entering the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Cheney High School senior Rachel Suominen has been named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship program, according to a news release from the high school. Suominen will receive a letter of commendation from the high school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Suominen, who said her last name is Finnish and means "Finland" in that language, is active in marching band and in the Future Business Leaders of American chapter at CHS. She serves as an officer in the latter, and has been to nationals twice - competing in "Principals and Procedures" in 2016 and "Emerging Business Issues" this past summer. She was also a state champion in 2017 in "Organizational Leadership."

Suominen said her favorite subjects are history and civics. She has applied to schools such as the University of Washington and University of California-Berkeley and is considering majoring in international affairs or international development.

"But, I change my mind a lot," she added.

About 34,000 Commended Students such as Suominen are being recognized for their achievements and "academic promise." According the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, while they won't continue on in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards in 2018, "Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test."
