Cards split NEA soccer matches

Medical Lake got the offense it expects to see from Makayla Geiger in earning a Northeast A League soccer win Sept. 19 on the road at Deer Park 2-1, but Freeman and Pullman found a way to put a stop to her in recording consecutive shutouts, 5-0 and 4-0 to finish the week.

Geiger broke a scoreless tie with her goal at the 60-minute mark against the Stags (2-2 NEA, 2-3 overall) and then broke a 1-1 deadlock with her goal as time wound down in the 78th minute. Both goals came on assists from Nicole Wetherell.

“Those are a great combination,’ head coach Zane Higgins said.

Taylor Cannon earned the win in the net with a busy afternoon, making 20 saves. The game was delayed three times for 80 minutes by the threat of lightning. And if that was not plenty, a malfunctioning sprinkler caused another 20-minute delay.

Last Friday, league-leading Freeman (3-0, 4-0) limited Medical Lake (3-1, 4-3) to just five shots on goal.

“We went down two goals against Freeman and started moving players around to try to get back in the game,” Higgins said. “It left us vulnerable in back.”

Medical Lake traveled to 2A Pullman Saturday in a nonleague match that was rescheduled after a postponement due to their inability to have enough rostered players early in the season. The Cardinals were again limited offensively with just two shots on goal.

Next up for ML are a pair of home contests, one on Sept. 26 against Lakeside (4-1, 4-1) and Freeman, today, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. at Shepard Field.
