AH council gets parks and recreation activity update

At the Sept. 25 Airway Heights City Council, parks and recreation coordinator Glenn Horton gave a presentation on what events have been going on in the parks and recreation department.

He went over what the teenagers and senior citizens have been doing throughout their programs and listed which ones were successful or unsuccessful.

Horton said that the department learned over the summer that seniors did not want to attend any of the outdoor activities, so most of them were canceled. On the teen’s side, the department held events over the summer including a ping pong tournament and showings of the first two Pitch Perfect movies.

For the upcoming season, the late night drop-offs for teens have started and have been well attended. Another big hit for the age group is open gym where 20-30 kids have been showing up.

Next up for the teens is a trip to Pattinson’s Roller Rink tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 29) and Laser Quest next month.

The seniors attended a fall prevention class earlier this month and Horton said it was very successful. SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) is also continuing for seniors which is a strength, balance and physical fitness program for adults 65 years and older.

Horton also went over the fact that they separated the food outings and trips due to seniors not being able to afford the food portion of the trip, so they would not go. Parks and recreation are now making it an option to just go on the free trips and attend other events that involve food separately.

Councilman Dave Malet asked Horton if there is a need for a new van for the department, which Horton said has gotten close to full a few times, so it is not a desperate need right now but they will need one in the future.

Lastly, Horton said that fall sports all have coaches right now except for one team due to a health concern, so Andy Gardner from parks and recreation is filling in for now. The teams have had a good turnout and the department maxed out all their spots for the season.

In staff reports, City Manager Albert Tripp presented a newsletter the city will send to citizens about the update on water.

The council also went into an executive session to review intergovernmental agreements with the Kalispel Tribe.
