Showdown at Fairways will feature regional top runners

Derek Slaughter’s brainchild came about in conversation with the guy who used to occupy his current slot as Cheney High School boys cross country head coach — Jay Martin.

The two conversed, as have many others who follow high school cross country in Washington, about the quality of programs in just this area of the state alone, a conversation that includes Cheney and in the last few years, Medical Lake. Some of those teams, like North Central and Mead, have even garnered national rankings.
