The Cheney High girls cross country team turned in a second-place performance in the 5,000-meter small school varsity division at the Coeur d’Alene Invitational last Saturday at the Hayden Canyon course in Hayden, Idaho. The Blackhawks were out-pointed 47-63 by Northeast A League’s Colville.

Cheney’s boys finished sixth overall in the same division with 164 points. Idaho’s Sandpoint won the meet title with 52 points, 14 ahead of University of the Greater Spokane League.

Hannah Spakousky led the Cheney girls, finishing seventh in a time of 21 minutes, with Brette Draper in ninth in 21:13.1. Freshman Jaela Thornburg was 14th in 22:04.9, followed by four Blackhawk runners in 16th – 19th: Mayah Spakousky, Jolene Whiteley, Jessica Vietzke and Alexia Batchelor to round out the varsity finishes.

Bas Holland placed second to lead the Cheney boys, finishing just under 22 seconds behind Riverside senior Ben Shaw, with a time of 16:41.6. Tucker Cunningham was 39th overall in 18:48.1, followed by Dillon Newbry, Patrick Purviance and Beckett Schoenleber in 41st – 43rd, with JT Gasper rounding out the varsity in 74th.

Both varsity races combined the small school runners with those in the large school category.

Blackhawks’ success wasn’t limited to the varsity. Cheney’s junior varsity girls finished second, also behind Sandpoint, with freshman Marion Mager-Reeser second overall in 21:48.1. The Blackhawks boys were third behind University and Sandpoint respectively, and were led by Julian Torres’ ninth-place finish in 19:19.9.

Cheney opened Great Northern League competition Wednesday, Sept. 20, by hosting Clarkston at Salnave Park. The Blackhawks will host the inaugural Battle of the 509 meet this Saturday afternoon, Sept. 23, at Fairways Golf Course, with competition capped by a community “glow in the dark” fun run.
