Car break-ins are big drain on Cheney police time

Most car break-ins reported in Cheney come through unlocked doors.

Soon the population of Cheney will grow by thousands as students return to Eastern Washington University for the 2017-18 school year.

But there's another number that always seems to increase with this influx of people - car break-ins. This is not to say that students are the perpetrators, but rather a great deal of the time are those who are victimized.

Statewide, thefts from motor vehicles rank No. 2 in the larceny-theft category of reported crimes at 32 percent, not far behind all other theft at 38.5 percent.
