Eastern women earn academic honors

For the 16th time in program history, the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team earned a spot on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, announced on Wednesday July 19.

The Eagles posted the 12th-highest grade point average (GPA) in all of NCAA Division I.

With a team grade point of 3.562, Eastern ties with Loyola University (Maryland) as having some of the best GPA’s in the country. The Eagles have become a fixture on the prestigious list, as this year marks the 16th WBCA Academic Top 25 selection for the program, 15 of which have come under head coach Wendy Schuller. Eastern Washington was the only school represented from the Big Sky Conference on this year’s list.

EWU volleyball wins fifth-straight AVCA academic award

For the fifth straight year, the Eastern Washington University volleyball team won another Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA). This year’s distinction marks the 14th time in program history that EWU has earned the award.

Eastern was one of a record-setting 822 teams across collegiate volleyball, and just one of 145 Division I programs. In order to be selected, a team must maintain a team grade point average of at least 3.30. The Eagles accumulated a GPA of 3.36 during the 2016-17 academic calendar.

“I am extremely proud of the team and all the hard work they have put forth in the classroom,” head coach Michael King said. “Anytime you can have a high team grade point average, it is a direct reflection on the quality of student-athletes we have in our program.”

This award has become a tradition for the Eastern Washington volleyball program, as the Eagles earned seven consecutive AVCA Team Academic Awards from 1999-2005 and have been featured in each of the past five team award announcements. EWU is joined by Idaho State and Northern Colorado as the only members of the Big Sky Conference selected for the AVCA Team Academic Award.
