Remodeled Sutton Park gazebo to host events this summer

Historical structure given better foundation, supports for roof

With the gazebo at Sutton Park newly remodeled, it is time to enjoy the summer with free concerts and movies in the park.

Back on May 9, the Cheney City Council voted 6-0 to approve a $16,985 bid from Steve Moser Construction of Nine Mile Falls to repair the foundation of the gazebo. Along with the foundation, work also included shoring up the roof supports.

The gazebo has a long history as it is dated back to the late 19th century and came to the city of Cheney in 1984 from a previous location at Fort Wright College in Spokane.

With the historical gazebo fixed, all concerts will be on Wednesdays in the park from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Movies will be on Fridays with show times beginning at dusk. All events are free and open to the public.

The movies on the calendar begin on July 21 with "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and continue every Friday until Aug. 18. The next movie will be "Back to the Future" followed by "Grease", "The Karate Kid" and finishing with "The Sandlot."

The first concert will take place on July 12 with Johnny and the Moondogs, a three-piece cover band based in Spokane. They play music from the '50s and '60s with deeper backgrounds in bluegrass, country bands, reggae and rock. The band includes John Miller on guitar, bass and vocals, Mark Harding also on guitar bass and vocals and Mike Gillet on drums.

The next event will be on July 19 with a concert from Mojo Box. This band is also based out of Spokane and considers their genre "Voodoo Rock."

The band members are Randy Campbell, Tom Lucas, Dale Nunn and Kosta Panidis. The band covers groups like Tragically Hip and Southern Culture on the Skids.

The Plaid Cats are slotted at the gazebo on July 26. This band is also based out of Spokane and has an original mix of vocally rich swing, country blues, doo-wop, jug band and rock "oldies."

Kosta la Vista comes to town on Aug. 2. This band has a genre of electric blues and rock with Pat Bakken on guitar, Terry Brenneise on drums and Kosta Panidis on bass.

Aug. 9 will be Ragtime Romantics. The seven-piece band is unique with their party-infused blend of ska, soul and R&B.

Next up is Rusty Jackson on Aug. 16, who is originally from La Mirada, Calif. but currently resides in Post Falls, Idaho. Jackson is a member of the Spokane River Band but has his own country genre gigs on the side. His influences come from Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, U2 and James Taylor.

Rounding off the summer concert series will be Last Chance for Gas on Aug. 23. The rock band has made appearances all over Spokane, including a stage during the Bloomsday race near the finish line.
