Medical Lake's City Council voted unanimously to extend its moratorium regarding acceptance of land use applications and permits another six months. This was following recommendations by the city attorney and report findings released by E&H Engineering indicating the city's public water system won't be sufficient to meet its 6-20-year projected water needs.

Eastern Washington University professor William J. Kelley was given the outstanding planner award at the American Planning Association Conference in Philadelphia.

Entering the 40th year of the rodeo, Matt Wichman was named the new Cheney Rodeo president.

June 19, 1997

The Military Order of the World Wars and the Air Force's 92nd Air Refueling Wing at Fairchild Air Force Base awarded the Bronze Patrick Henry Medallion for patriotic achievement to Cheney High School junior Amy White.

EWU, Cheney's largest individual wastewater producer, wants the city to re-examine how much of the city's total wastewater flow it was responsible for. EWU was paying for 29 percent.

Garden Springs Elementary School closed its doors to students for good.

June 18, 1987

Twenty-seven teams entered the double-elimination canoe jousting tournament at Founders Day in Medical Lake.

The community of Cheney came together to donate enough funds to go towards giving Nicole Locher an electrical chair. Locher was a nine-year-old with cerebral palsy.

Participating in his final commencement ceremony as president of Eastern Washington University, Dr. H. George Frederickson was presented with "president emeritus" status by Michael Ormsby, chairman of EWU's board of trustees.

June 16, 1977

Three acres of rugged forestland north of Tyler and just off Drumheller Road were scorched by a lightening-caused grass and timber fire.

Darcie Donegan and Linda Johns, Cheney High School seniors, were representing Cheney this week in Ellensburg at the American Legion Auxiliary Evergreen Girls State session.

The town of Airway Heights requested Spokane County oil town streets that are asphalt-based for dust control.

June 15, 1967

The Cheney School Board agreed to increase the price of milk with school lunches from 2 cents to 3 cents. Adult lunches will also jump from 40 cents to 45 cents.

George Sloan was elected commander during a meeting of Medical Lake's American Legion post. Marshall Webb was chosen vice commander.

Dr. Walter Powers, Eastern Washington State College professor of education and psychology returned to the Cheney campus after a year of teaching at five different universities in England.
