Help a Cheney neighbor get yardwork done this spring

In conjunction with Cheney’s annual community cleanup day, Cheney Clean Sweep, area residents may nominate an elderly or disabled friend, neighbor, or family member for free spring cleaning yardwork. The one-time assistance will take place Saturday, April 22, between the hours of 9 a.m. – noon. Work may include raking, pruning, and removal of yard waste.

Preference will be given to owner-occupied homes, which must be located within the Cheney city limits. Yardwork assistance will be provided by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, as well as local Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops.

To nominate someone for yardwork assistance, please contact Cheney Code Enforcement Officer Capt. Rick Campbell at rcampbell@cityofcheney.org, or by phone at (509) 498-9334. A limited number of residents can receive help, and recipients will be notified prior to April 22.

Cheney Clean Sweep is in its 10th year, and features a variety of spring-cleaning activities, such as litter pickup in public spaces, free disposal of unmounted passenger vehicle tires and household hazardous waste (paints, cleaners, solvents, etc.).

Senate budget includes funding for EWU science building

The Washington state Senate unanimously passed its capital budget plan on March 30, which includes $60 million for a long-awaited new science building at Eastern Washington University.

The 55-year-old current building is no longer considered adequate for the university’s needs, lacking space and up-to-date health and safety standards. Increased demand for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classes pushed the university to look for ways to offer more classes. Crowded lab environments with ventilation concerns also demanded a more modern facility equipped to handle advanced lab work.

“This is a big win for EWU, but most importantly it’s a big win for the students of our state,” Sixth District Sen. Mike Baumgartner said in a news release. “This builds on the investments we’re already making to increase the number of openings for STEM students.”

The recently-passed Senate operating budget includes openings for 1,800 new Washington resident students with 70 percent targeted to STEM majors. This results in 300 new student openings at EWU between 2017 – 2019 with 210 slotted for STEM students.

EWU received funding in 2009 to complete pre-design work on a new interdisciplinary science building, but the project has remained on hold until funds could be provided to complete the design and construction phase.

‘Miracle’ wraps up run this weekend

The last two performances of StageWest’s “Miracle on South Division Street,” written by Tom Dudzick are Friday April 7, at 7 p.m. and a “Dinner Theatre” presentation Saturday, April 8, at 6 p.m. Both performances are at Cheney’s Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 639 Elm St.

“Miracle on South Division Street” is the story of the Nowak family, living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, N.Y.’s East Side. Clara, the family matriarch, happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom – a 20-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop.

When the play opens, daughter Ruth divulges her plan to finally “go public” with the family miracle by creating a one-woman play about the sacred event. A deathbed confession about the statue shakes the entire family and could unravel the family legend.

Come find out if the Blessed Virgin Mother actually materialized in the barber shop. If not the Virgin Mother, who does the statue depict?

Tickets for the Friday show are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students with valid school ID. The dinner theatre is being catered by Mike Hartman and is by reservation only, with tickets $30 per persons. Reservations must be made and paid by Friday April 7. For tickets contact Nancy Kuonen at (509) 768-4792.
