Eastern Washington University announced that professor Laurie Morley, Ph.D, is one of five Washington public university faculty to receive the 2016 Representative Timm Ormsby Award for Faculty Citizenship.
Sponsored by the Washington Council of Faculty Representatives, this award seeks to encourage, recognize and honor exemplary civic engagement by faculty from each of Washington’s six public universities. The award was created in 2013 and named for Rep. Timm Ormsby in recognition of his tireless effort to promote civic leadership across the state.
Morley, who joined EWU in 2000, is a professor of physical education, health and recreation. She is also director of the Health and Fitness Program. Her footprint has touched academics, athletics and sustainability.
Working with EWU Residence Life, Morley has helped to establish a Living Learning Community with a focus on health, wellness and sustainability, ensuring these concerns are instilled in EWU graduates. She is also currently working with two other EWU faculty members to establish a new sustainability major at the university.
Programs and events Morley has developed, or co-developed that raise the standard of living in our regional communities include the Snow Stomp on Mount Spokane, the EWU/West Valley School District Civics Conference, and professional development opportunities for teachers in the Medical Lake, East Valley, Spokane and Cheney school districts.
Nominees for the award are solicited by faculty governance leadership at each institution and selected for exceptional achievement.
