The Watermelon Hill fire that officially burned 10,500 acres in Spokane and Lincoln Counties and came dangerously close to Fishtrap Lake Resort has been declared contained Fire District No. 3 Deputy Chief Bill Dennstaedt said this past Monday.

“It’s contained, DNR (Department of Natural Resources) still has equipment on it,” Dennstaedt said. “We did have a flare-up today (July 28) well inside the line.”

DNR is monitoring and extinguishing the hotspots, he said, and expects that to be the case for the remainder of this week.

Dennstaedt said he had just finished driving in the area of the fire. “There was a hotspot near Amber that was doused,” he said
