Still time to reduce those library fines with food

Spokane County Library District is celebrating National Library Week, April 13 – 19 with the second annual Food for Fines, a community food drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Food for Fines works like this: for each donation of a non-perishable food item library members can reduce their overdue fines by $1 – maximum $10 forgiven per library account. Food for Fines is happening at all 10 Spokane County Libraries. Donations benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank and their expanded networks in Cheney, Deer Park, Fairfield, and Medical Lake.

Food for Fines is a win-win for all involved. Last year, library members reduced their overdue fines with over $4,000 in forgiven fines and supported their neighbors by donating more than 5,000 pounds of food.

The Second Harvest Food Bank serves approximately 194,000 people in the Inland Northwest each year and needs 60,000 pounds of food from drives such as this each month for its food pantry network. Food items that are the most needed include peanut butter, canned meats, soups and stews, boxed dinners and beans.
