Medical Lake begins search for superintendent

The Medical Lake School District is wasting no time in their search for their next superintendent.

Dr. Pam Veltri, who has been the district’s superintendent for the last 14 years, has taken a position as the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction with the Mead School District. She will leave Medical Lake in July.

The district has enlisted the services of Educational Consultants LLC, to help search for candidates in Washington state.

Some of the qualification for prospective superintendents include professional educator with successful administrative experience, successful experience with school finance and superintendent’s credential or near completion of a superintendent’s credential program.

Educational Consultants LLC owner Glenn Frizzell said his firm has been in contact with the Washington State School Directors Association and the Washington Association of School Administration in searching for applicants.

They have also been making calls to superintendents to look for prospective candidates and provide them with information.

The firm will conduct in depth investigations of each candidate’s background before returning to the board with prospective candidates.

They will put candidates into categories and discuss with the board which person fits best in which category.

Frizzell said his company would only make recommendations if the school board asks them.

The firm will also hold forums to gain feedback and input from staff, district employees and the public. Those who participate in these forums will be asked: what they like about the candidate, what they didn’t like and would that person make a good superintendent?

“We are looking for feedback, but not rankings,” Frizzell said.

According to the school district’s website, the timeframe for finalists to be selected is April 21. Finalists will be brought to Medical Lake to conduct a 90-minute interview with the school board and Frizzell said the school board has the final decision on who is hired.

“This will be the most important decision the board will make,” Frizzell said. “They are picking who is going to lead them into the future.”

Once the school board has found a candidate, they will negotiate a contract with them. The new superintendent will report for duty, July 1.
