A 35-year-old woman escaped from a 35-hour ordeal in Cheney after she was abducted in Spokane and taken to the home of Jonathan C. Hair. The abductor reportedly assaulted the woman both physically and sexually before the victim escaped to the nearby home of Cheney Mayor Amy Jo Sooy.

The Washington State Supreme Court ruled to disbar attorney Steve Miller, ending a seven and a half year battle with the former Cheney city attorney. Miller, who served 27-years as an attorney, was charged with misconduct.

A one-car accident south of the Cheney-Tyler Road claimed the life of longtime Cheney resident, 43-year-old Ronnie L. Dow. Investigators said Dow likely overcorrected after he veered off the road causing his pickup to roll and eject the driver who was pinned under the truck.

Cheney’s movie theather, 24 Frames, was expected to close its doors by the end of the month or early June if ticket sales did not increase.

Three wins, including a 4-2 decision over Lakeside and a doubleheader sweep of Chewelah gave Medical Lake a sweep of their baseball games the past week. Rocky Menard’s RBI single provided the insurance for the Cardinals in the win over the Eagles.

April 28, 1983

Cheney was to have two new doctors in town with the announcement that Dr. Charles Hough and Dr. P.Z. Pearce would join the practices of Drs. Randy Cain and Wilfred Gamon at the Cheney Medical Center.

Cheney City Councilman Fred Johns announced that the Spokane Transit Authority would be building a transit center in the downtown area.

Key Tronics new plant in Cheney recently added 15 to 20 new employees to bring to 300 the number hired in the first year of operation.

Eastern Washington University’s provost for academic affairs, Dr. Duane Thompson, reported that up to 40 percent of the current freshman class had to be placed in remedial writing classes at the school.

Cheney’s Lee Henry hit a three-run home run in the third inning to power Cheney past Colville 12-0 in the first game of a Border League baseball doubleheader.

April 26, 1973

Without discussion or public comment, an ordinance requiring sidewalks and curbs on all future Local Improvement Districts was passed unanimously by the Cheney City Council.

The 1973 census of Cheney showed an increase of 162 residents over the 1972 figure, census coordinator Bill Wynd reported to the Cheney City council.

A building permit was issued to William Geschke for the construction of a $318,000 shopping center near the College Hill Apartments. The project was listed to be built at 2018 First and included space for a grocery market, hardware and drug stores, plus other businesses.Completion set for April 1974.

With a pair of wins, 78.5 to 66.5 over West Valley and 109-35 versus Colville, the Cheney Blackhawks remained undefeated in Border League track competition. Steve Kirk scored wins both days in the shot put to stay personally undefeated in the event this year.

April 26, 1963

Cheney School District Superintendent Richard C. Langton recommended approval on a new teachers’ contract that would up the pay on new teachers by $35 annually and up to $267 per year for educators with 13 years experience.

“The Communist Problem In India,” was to be the topic of a talk to be given at EWSC’s student union by Washington State University’s chairman of the history and political science department, Dr. Herbert J. Wood.

More than 120 Cheney High School athletes, and their coaches, Don Monson, Bob Everson, Eldon Engle and Fred Rosenzweig, were to be honored at the annual banquet.

EWSC track star, freshman Clyde West, was injured in a one-car accident 15 miles west of Ritzville as he returned from a visit to his home in Longview. According to track coach W.B. “Red” Reese, West suffered severe facial cuts and a knee injury that would likely require surgery.
