National American Legion Auxiliary president visits Cheney chapter

Cheney is in for a rare treat as American Legion Auxiliary national president Peggy Thomas pays a visit in early March during a swing through Washington. Thomas will be the guest speaker at a dinner March 8 at Cheney’s American Legion Hall on College Avenue downtown.

Thomas is a 31-year member of the Auxiliary, joining through her late husband U.S. Army veteran John C. Thomas, and is the first president from Virginia since Anna Gear in 1983-1984. A retired vice president of a petroleum distributorship with three divisions, Thomas has held leadership roles at all levels of the Auxiliary.

She has been president of two separate Auxiliary units twice, holding all chairmanships in both. She was the Virginia department president, secretary and chairman of a variety of committees including the advisory committee for 10 years.

Nationally, before becoming president she served as vice president and as chairman at one time of eight separate committees including Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, Leadership, Children & Youth and Membership. She volunteers as the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service deputy at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond, Va. and is listed in the “Who’s Who in Women in Business.”


The March 8 dinner begins at 6 p.m. Dinner is $7.50 per person, with reservations necessary by March 4.
