Cheney golf teams return from spring break with a flurry of matches

The Cheney boys' and girls' golf teams spent a busy first week back from spring break, competing in several invitational meets along with their second Great Northern League match competition.

April 11 the girls traveled to Pullman for the Palouse Ridge Invitational, finishing fifth out of 11 teams on the 5,552-yard course at Palouse Ridge Golf Course. The Blackhawks had 457 strokes, seven back of fourth-place Pullman and 109 off the pace of invitational champion Lewiston.

Marye Fuqua led Cheney with a round of 104, tying Hermiston's Laiky Carnes for 12th overall. Pullman's Paige Whidbee finished first individually with a round of 85, winning a playoff with Lewiston's Danny Jagelski.

Also for Cheney Danielle Bauge shot a 112, Marina Wilbur a 120 with Shyann Morton one stroke behind her and Hailey Crawford finishing the day with a 148. Besides Pullman and Cheney other GNL teams taking part were Deer Park, finishing sixth, East Valley in seventh along with Clarkston and Medical Lake.

Wednesday the girls traveled to Deer Park for their second league match, finishing second overall with a 525, one stroke back of Pullman on the 6,751-yard Deer Park Golf Club course.

Fuqua led the Blackhawks, finishing second overall with a round of 94, 16 strokes back of match champion Whidbee. Bauge and Wilbur both shot rounds of 103, with Morton a 107, Allie Brown a 118 and Kaitlyn Hohrman a 141.

The second-place finish combined with Cheney's first place at the opening league match in Clarkston March 21 puts the Blackhawks girls in first in league competition at three points, East Valley second at six points (second at Clarkston, fourth at Deer Park) with Pullman and Clarkston tied for third with eight points each. For Morton, the excitement of leading the GNL after two matches was matched by his daughter Shyann's hole in one on the par-3, No. 16.

The Blackhawks girls wrapped up their schedule on Monday, April 18, at the Girls' Stag Spring Kick-off at Deer Park. Cheney shot a 525 to finish third out of eight complete teams, 16 overall.

Fuqua finished tied for sixth overall with Freeman's Alissa Maine with rounds of 89, both receiving medals in the Gold Flight. Wilbur shot a 104, Steffi Cunningham a 109, Morton a 111 and Bauge a 112 to wrap up Cheney's scoring.

The Blackhawks boys also got things rolling after the break, opening with their Stag Invitational April 11 at Deer Park followed by the second GNL match and Monday's Kraus Invitational at Avondale Golf Course in Hayden, Idaho.

At the Stag Cheney finished 10th out of 14 teams with a score of 506. Central Valley took top honors with a 403, followed by host Deer Park at 432 and West Valley at 438. Sophomore Mark Holy led the Blackhawks with a round of 95, while freshman Kody Brewer shot a 99, sophomore Nick Hilzenberger a 100, junior Cole Gerard a 101 and Peter Condon a 111. Also competing was sophomore Eric Blazekovich, with Holy winning a medal in the Platinum Flight.

Deer Park's Mitch Rummer led all individuals with a 4-over-par round of 76, with Central Valley's Troy Smith and East Valley's Jake Myre two strokes back.

At last Wednesday's league match the Blackhawks finished tied with Pullman for fifth with a 455 points, 86 back of match champion Clarkston. Sophomore Tyler Maurer led Cheney with a round of 85, his best so far this season, followed by Tanzer (87), senior Matt Chapman (88) and juniors Cutter Kuwada (93) and Cole Gerard (102). Also competing was junior Jay Anderson who shot a 105.

Monday on the 6,600-yard course at Avondale Cheney shot a 362 for seventh out of 22 teams with five golfers finishing, 23 teams overall. Tanzer shot a round of 85, good for 18th overall while Mauer's 88 put him in a three-way tie at 20th. Chapman shot a 93, Kuwada a 96 and Anderson a 121 to wrap up the Blackhawks' scoring.

Central Valley's Joel Christenson shot a 73 to lead all individuals and his team to a first place finish.
