  • Medical Lake boys fall in foul-fest opener

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 11, 2015

Most of the time, Medical Lake boy’s head basketball coach Arnold Brown is able to make fixes and adjustments to tighten up his team’s defense. But there was nothing he could do in the Cardinals’ Dec. 5 opening night 60-52 nonleague loss at home to the 2B Liberty Lancers. While his team limited the Lancers to just 13 field goals — a notable effort Brown said — the visitors from Spangle attempted 49 free throws. Medical Lake shot 31, still a significant number from the strip...

The Medical Lake girl’s basketball team got balanced scoring from senior Bradyn Wegner and sophomore Makayla Geiger and won their opening game of the season in a 54-43 nonleague victory over Liberty, Dec. 5. “Anytime you get a win it’s a good thing, especially first game of the year, it builds confidence,” head coach Kyle Lundberg said. The Cardinals started slow, getting outscored 11-5 in the opening quarter but got the offense in gear the final three quarters. “We had some...

  • Foul trouble hampers Lady Blackhawks opening weekend

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 11, 2015

Turnovers and fouls were what kept the Cheney High girls basketball team from posting its first win of the season last weekend. The Lady Blackhawks committed 21 fouls in a 45-36 loss at Reardan on Thursday, and another 18 fouls to go with 31 turnovers in a 60-54 loss Friday at Freeman. Foul trouble against the 2B classification Indians hampered several players, including sophomore post Kristie McGourin, who Lady Blackhawks head coach JT Johnson said is the team’s “energizer” but was limited in playing time with four fouls...

  • Bowl season is about the players - and the money

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 11, 2015

College football’s bowl season is almost upon us and I couldn’t resist the urge to comment. This year we have new wrinkles to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision’s annual feeding frenzy at the money trough. With the addition of three new bowls this year, it was necessary to come up with 84 teams to fill those slots. There are only 128 teams at the FBS level. The numbers game means there were good odds several bowls would have to invite teams possessing a sub-.500 record, and indeed there are three such teams headed to post...

  • Ferguson captures Deer Park Invite title, Pederson third

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 11, 2015

The Cheney High wrestling team kicked off its season with a few high notes, most notably Michael Ferguson winning the 285-pound division at the Deer Park Invite, Dec. 5. After a first-round bye, Ferguson tore through his bracket, pinning Royal's David Lopez in the quarterfinals, fellow Blackhawk Garrett Pederson in the semi-finals and Freeman's Joey Sims in the championship round. All three of Ferguson's pins were under a minute. Ferguson spent most of last season at 220...

  • Sherritt adds Grey Cup to championship collection

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 11, 2015

It's been quite a 10 year run for former Eastern Washington University linebacker J.C. Sherritt. Sherritt capped things Sunday, Nov. 29 in Winnipeg, Man., where, as a member of the Edmonton Eskimos, he will now have his name inscribed on Canada's famed Grey Cup, much as hockey players do with the Stanley Cup. Edmonton's 26-20 victory over the Ottawa RedBlacks completed a stellar season for the Eskimos, a great comeback for Sherritt, and a decade in which he's won a state high...

  • Blackhawks blitz Reardan in season opener

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 11, 2015

In their first two forays onto the hardwood this season, the Cheney High boys’ basketball squad didn’t fail to produce in the hard work department. What the Blackhawks now need to do is bring the intensity head coach Gregg Smith said they possessed in their season opener to each and every game. Cheney’s intensity was something that hosts Reardan High School simply couldn’t match last Thursday, Dec. 3. The Blackhawks dominated every aspect of the game from start to finish in blitzing the 2B Indians 73-32 in the opener....
