  • Cheney's 'interim' food bank director retires

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 11, 2017

It's a chilly Wednesday morning, Nov. 29, at the Cheney Food Bank, and volunteers John Matthews and Jerry Stewart have just finished loading 3–4 pre-bagged sacks of groceries into a cart for a young couple, who stand nearby on the other side of a short, small counter. The sacks contain many items, including dry and bakery goods, fresh fruit and vegetables. The woman finishes signing a ledger on the counter, at which point Matthews retreats to a tall row of shelves on the r...

  • Medical Lake's annual Winter Festival continues to grow

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 7, 2017

It may be hard to top the 2016 version of the Re*Imagine Christmas Winter Festival in Medical Lake but they'll try. "Last year it was 'cue the snow,'" festival director Terri Cooper said. "People that came downtown (said) it was like walking into a Hallmark movie which is exactly what we're trying to create." This year's event takes place Saturday, Dec. 9, from 1 – 7 p.m. It has grown again to include a number of new additions, most notably a fireworks display that c...

  • AH meeting turns contentious

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Dec 7, 2017

There were barely any empty seats at the Nov. 30 Airway Heights Planning Commission meeting as citizens packed the room for the public hearing on rezones around the city. “This is the most people I have ever seen at one of these meetings,” Commissioner Matthew Pederson said. The meeting hovered around four hours and had 12 comments on the various rezones throughout the evening. The rezone that caused most of the trouble was ZMA 2017-04. This includes 20-acres of land located in the northwest quadrant of the city, which is...

  • 'Me Too' testimony can turn innocence into criminality

    Updated Dec 7, 2017

By FRANK WATSON Contributor The “Me Too” movement appears to be gathering momentum as more and more women come forward and report long ago incidents of sexual misconduct. Currently, the most noteworthy accused is Alabama senatorial candidate and former state supreme court judge Roy Moore. Moore’s case is noteworthy because he adamantly denies all charges. His denials didn’t stand a chance. He has been tried and convicted in the national press. Republican leaders have repeatedly asked him to step down from his campaig...

  • Here's to spending on booze, women and movies

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 7, 2017

It seems to me there used to be a “Bah, humbug” award for people whose comments and/or actions exemplify those from fictional miser Ebenezer Scrooge. If there isn’t such an award, there should be. Either way, I’d like to nominate someone for its receipt this year: Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. Grassley is quoted on several points in a Dec. 2 Des Moines Register story about proposed changes to the federal estate tax enacted as part of recently passed tax reform measures. Both the House and Senate would double the exe...

  • The once mighty emerge from the muck, mud

    Updated Dec 7, 2017

Looks like the male chauvinist pigs have emerged from their hiding places in the mud. In a series of recent shocking revelations, a seemingly endless march of icons from media, film and politics have slogged their way out of the slop for all to see after being branded for their alleged horrible behavior towards women. Men who have previously held supposed places on pedestals in society are now generally hidden away in shameful embarrassment. Some of those are ones we are supposed to trust to deliver the daily news, like Matt...

  • Telling it like it is

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 7, 2017

Medical Lake's City Administrator Doug Ross only has a long skinny window in his office, but he seems to have a pretty clear picture about what goes on in the town. Tasked with how to best spend the $5.9 million yearly budget for the city of 5,000, and making sure there's just enough to go around, Ross said there are naturally many challenges. It is projected that the city will end 2018 with just short of $1.8 million in reserves, seemingly a lot of money, but one never knows...

  • Combatting staff shortages in Medical Lake schools

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 7, 2017

Appropriately, a recent workshop for future substitute teachers in Medical Lake was termed a “boot camp.” That’s because the district continues to fight a battle to fill an ever-decreasing pool of people to fill in for regular classroom teachers who are either away ill, at classes or absent for any number of other reasons. “Was it our original, unique idea, no,” Kim Headrick, director of teaching and learning said. Officials had heard of others, West Valley in Spokane V...

  • Exhibiting 'Appropriate Audience Behavior'

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 7, 2017

Sometimes the best way to get a point across is to do exactly the opposite of what you intend to say. Such is the premise of Westwood Middle School's first drama production "Appropriate Audience Behavior." The 25–35 minute comedy by playwright Ian McWelthy follows the trials of Carol and Ashley, two women who attend a production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" expecting to see a tale of woe but instead, experience their own tragedy by having to sit next to some of the "world's n...
