  • Seeking emergency changes

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 7, 2018

Medical Lake Fire Chief Jason Mayfield is not at all bashful about saying he can lose sleep over the service his volunteer department offers citizens. Perhaps Mayfield will be able to rest easier in the years to come if some type of deal is crafted with Spokane County Fire District No. 3 to take over coverage for the city. Mayfield, who himself works full-time for American Medical Response, monitors calls, "Every day, every day." He provides a report every month to the Medical...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Dec 6, 2018

1 Years Ago Dec. 4, 2008 The Cheney City Council trimmed almost $7 million from 2009’s annual budget, about $6.5 million of which came from Public Works Department funds. The Cheney Free Press introduced Airway Heights’ new K9 officer, a German shepard and black lab mix named Austin. It was the first time the Airway Heights Police Department had employed a K9 unit. Early snowfall had local drivers planning for icy winter conditions. 20 Years Ago Dec. 3, 1998 A home-monitoring program for DUI offenders was introduced in Med...

  • Building walls is not part of Bible, instead it is hypocrisy

    Updated Dec 6, 2018

Hypocrisy. When I was eight years old, I wrote a poem after attending church one Sunday: ”Eleven o’clock on Sunday Morning, Many hear that age-old warning, Boast about their adoration, Then forget their obligations.” Even now, I still see so much hypocrisy — in churches, meeting houses, mosques, temples and synagogues. For Trump-supporting Christians, I wonder what they don’t understand about Matthew, Chapter 25 in the Bible. To paraphrase a portion: Water to the thirsty, Food to the hungry, Care for the sick, Visits to...

  • Right and left are both equally guilty of corruption

    Updated Dec 6, 2018

I’m writing in response to the opinion published in the Nov 22 edition by Tom H. Hastings, “If you want to find corruption, just look to the right.” I also grew up thinking that politics was a clean game. I’ve discovered it isn’t and it’s tainted on both sides, not just the right. I am an independent voter and have voted both sides in many elections. But I was offended by the assumptions that any voter that didn’t vote Democratic was supporting sleaze, lies and corruption. Have you even looked at the corruption that has happ...

  • Solve migrant invasion by investing in Central America

    FRANK WATSON, Contributor|Updated Dec 6, 2018

The President’s methods and manner usually leave much to be desired, but once in a while he gets something right. He is spot-on when he calls the growing crowd on our southern border a “migrant invasion.” I can’t understand why this concept seems new to anyone or why the national press objects to the title. Migrant invasions are as old as recorded history. When Moses led his people out of Egypt seeking the Promised Land, it was a migrant invasion. After 40 years wandering in the desert, they became strong enough to take up...

  • The holiday season brings out the best in caring

    LINDSAY HOBBS, Contributor|Updated Dec 6, 2018

The holiday season and caring go hand in hand. I feel it is a safe assumption that for many of us the act of caring comes rather naturally, and we rarely look at the act itself as something extraordinary. But in a world that can be harsh and ugly at times, recognition, not for the sake of recognition, but rather as inspiration is needed to maintain a semblance of balance. My work family is made up of some of the most caring and generous people I know. I reached out to them to share their stories about caring: “Seven years a...

  • Equality shouldn't vanish at home

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 6, 2018

Women in the workplace have come a long way in terms of opportunities, respect and equality in the last 50 years. Heck, up until 1974 a woman couldn’t get a credit card in her own name without a husband’s signature. But a new study recently released by sociology professors at the University of Illinois at Chicago found that Americans’ are far more likely to believe in gender equality at work than they are at home. The study, based on national survey data from 1977 to 2016, is set to be published in the journal “Gend...

  • Cheney Public Works budget looks at 2019 work

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Dec 6, 2018

One of the biggest accomplishments for Cheney’s Public Works Department in 2018 comes from the building department in the form of construction permit valuations — an amount topping $82.1 million, making it the most profitable in valuations in the past five years. That figure, however, is largely attributed to the almost $77.8 million in commercial permits, and those stem from two major entities in the city: Cheney School District and Eastern Washington University. “We’re still dealing with the PUB (EWU’s Pence Union Bui...

  • Defendant sentenced in 2017 Airway Heights death

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 6, 2018

Twenty-year-old Christian Palmer was sentenced last month to 24 months in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the baseball-bat beating that left 53-year-old Airway Heights resident Terry Toner dead in 2017. Palmer and Brandon Pierce, also 20, have been in custody since August of last year, when a house party led to a late-night brawl between the three men. Palmer was originally charged with second-degree murder, but the charge was downgraded as a part of a plea agreement. Court documents show...

  • Medical Lake board hears of school conference success

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 6, 2018

Engaging both students and parents come school conference time is making a decidedly positive impact in the Medical Lake School District if the most recent editions are an indicator. That’s what the school board learned at its Nov. 27 meeting. After the numbers were crunched, the participation rate was most pleasing to district officials with the high school and Hallett Elementary leading the way at 92 percent attendance. Michael Anderson Elementary at Fairchild Air Force B...

  • Impact aid: Federal money that helps property tax-poor school districts

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 6, 2018

Medical Lake School District recently got all caught up with an important part of its funding with the receipt of the last payment of Federal Impact Aid. The money, about $1.7 million, comes in dribs and drabs and apparently in no dependable schedule. It makes up about 6 percent of the district’s budget of approximately $26 million. According to the official source, Impact Aid is designed to assist local school districts that have lost property tax revenue. This can be due t...

  • Some hands-on learning how money moves

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 6, 2018

On Friday, Nov. 30, Medical Lake Middle School students were presented with fictional budgeting scenarios outlining imaginary occupations, incomes, family structures and expenses. What they learned, put succinctly by one eighth-grader: “Everything is expensive.” The activity was part of Junior Achievement’s Finance Park, an event meant to give students real-world experience weighing adult financial choices. Junior Achievement is a non-profit youth organization with a goal of teaching young people financial literacy and entrep...

  • Airway Heights council addresses 2019 budget

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 6, 2018

The Airway Heights City Council had a short agenda to tackle at their Dec. 3 meeting, hearing first readings of multiple ordinances relating to the city’s 2019 budget. One of those was Ordinance C-916, which will adopt the budget for the fiscal year ending in December 2019. In it, the city proposes nearly $10 million in expenditures from the current expense fund and just over $5 million from the water-sewer fund, primarily due to capital improvements like the Airway Heights Recreation Center and expenses related to the c...

  • EWU shatters annual Giving Joy Day goal

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Dec 6, 2018

Tuesday, Nov. 27, was a joyful day for Eastern Washington University students, faculty and staff. The reason is the university’s third annual “Giving Joy Day” — coinciding with the national Giving Tuesday — brought in more donations than had been anticipated. A whole lot more. Hoping to reach a goal of $275,000 in monetary pledges, in-kind gifts and cash, Eastern instead blew that number out of the water by raising over $1.8 million in contributions. In fact, $1,801,721 to be exact. The biggest reason for the size of the co...

  • Shades of Christmas

The city of Cheney's Christmas tree is transformed into different shades of color as part of last weekend's Holiday Hoopla downtown. The tree, which has traditionally featured colored lights, was updated with new white lights and shaded with blue, red and purple at times following its lighting in front of the library. More pictures of last Friday night's event, which also carried over into Saturday morning and afternoon, are on page 12....

After unanimous approval, Cheney utility customers will see a 5 percent increase in their base rates and usage fees, and a 2.2 percent cost of living adjustment in their sewer charges.
