By JOHN McCALLUM Editor A four-run fifth inning was all the Cheney softball team needed last week to extend their winning streak to four games and edge visiting East Valley 4-3 in a Great Northern League showdown between two playoff-bound teams with aspirations of a high postseason seed. “It was a playoff type game,” Lady Hawks head coach Gary Blake said Monday night. The Knights, tied with Cheney for second in the standings at 10-5, 11-6 overall, struck first. In the top of the fifth East Valley scored twice against Che...

Last Saturday night some 800 people continued the tradition that was started 30 years ago with the first Killin Dinner, Dance and Auction. They carried forward the memory of, and the job Killin started when he joined the faculty back in 1953 at what was th...
By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Josh and Matt Horsley grew up on a fruit farm in the Yakima Valley, surrounded by the best Mother Nature had to offer. From their early days, they helped their father harvest hundreds of thousands of pounds of fruit every year. While they were raised among delicious fresh fruit, the twin brothers soon learned not everyone knew what fresh, tree-ripened fruit tasted like. They moved to Cheney to attend Eastern Washington University, and a couple years later Josh's new wife Marisa did the...

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Both Cheney track and field teams breezed to easy wins over Medical Lake in Great Northern League competition last Thursday at home. The Blackhawks boys downed the Cardinals 113-30 to run their league meet record to 5-0 while the girls cruised to a 106.5-31.5 win. Cheney's boys spread the wealth pretty evenly when it came to top finishes, as did their female counterparts. Dietrich Smith took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.30 seconds, with Eric Igbinoba and Marquis Diomede finishing fourt...
By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The Medical Lake boys' and girls' track teams continue to record solid individual efforts and while those have not translated into much in terms of team scores now, they should in the future. Cheney and Medical Lake saw their 2011 baseball seasons come to a quick end in the opening round of the Great Northern League playoffs Tuesday afternoon as lower seeds scored upset wins. At Cheney, No. 6 East Valley pushed across the winning run in the top of the seventh inning to score a 4-3 win in the loser-out first-round game. Over in Medical Lake, No. 5 West Valley broke open a close game by scoring two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to take an 11-5 win. Further details and full stories in next week's Cheney...
By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney boys' tennis team came up short in grasping the close points last Tuesday against a good Clarkston team, getting swept 7-0 in a match moved to Clarkston because of local weather conditions. Head coach Jesse Erickson said many of the games were close, hard-fought contests even though the final scores don't reflect it. “We need to get that mental edge to step up and take those deuce points that are so crucial,” he said Monday. “That's one thing we're going to work on a lot is those press...

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor It's amazing sometimes how a plan comes together – even if it's accidental. Eastern Washington University engineering seniors Alexis Gonzalez, Rochelle MacDonald and six other students had a plan for their capstone project. Little did they know that first week in January that as their plan was taking shape in their minds, events on a football field 1,800 miles away were taking place that would turn their project into a one-of-a-kind piece of art that would help EWU alumni and students. The group k...

Cooper, 19, of Medical Lake, was apprehended after attempting to pass forged checks at Denny's Market. The Airway Heights City Council attempted to pass park impact fees at its la... Full story
By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter By earning a split last week against Pullman, the Medical Lake softball team will play in the post-season for the first time in a number of years. Medical Lake fell 10-0 to the undefeated regular season Great Northern League champs West Valley last Wednesday and then split a Friday doubleheader with the Greyhounds, winning the opener 14-11 but falling 10-3 in the second game. Starting next week the Cardinals (4-13 GNL, 5-14 overall) will face either Cheney or East Valley. The ML opponent...
By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The plan is quite simple for Medical Lake's soccer coach Zane Higgins when it comes to their first-round Great Northern League playoff game at 4 p.m. this afternoon at Shepard Field. “I don't want a repeat of last year,” Higgins said, referring to last year's 2-1 loss to the Eagles in a loser-out contest, again played at home. The two teams just met last Monday in the rain and wind at West Valley where Medical Lake rode the foot of team scoring leader Devon Prince to post a 2-0 win in the tea...
Modified education program brings staffing cuts, use of reserve fund By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter On April 26 the Medical Lake School Board passed a resolution allowing school officials to draw more deeply from a rainy day fund and reduce certain programs as needed to address expected state funding cuts. The board declared a financial emergency in March, directing Superintendent Pam Veltri to develop the modified education program that was approved last week. Her recommendation lowers the restriction on a designated...
Please return Medical Lake historical items for safekeeping Since the historical items have been removed from the Medical Lake City Council chambers I have found that many items have been “borrowed.” These items were given to the historical groups, starting with Mrs. Johnson who lived on Staples Street in the 1960s and 70s. The historical group has changed through the years, but they have been terrifically interested in what was there so Medical Lake could keep them intact for their ancestors. Hopefully items borrowed will be...
By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Like many Americans I'll likely be able to recall where I was and what I was doing the moment I heard that we had finally caught and killed 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. How I felt about it might not be so easy. I know many people are ecstatic, dancing, cheering and singing in the streets. But like others who sent their thoughts Sunday night to the news shows covering the story, including one who lost family in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, it's hard for me to celebrate with joy the...

The Medical Lake girls' tennis team completed a rough week of Great Northern League play losing two matches on the court and one to the weather. A Monday meeting with East Valley was postponed due to weather to this past Monday, but that too was rained out. There was no word as of press time as to a make-up date. In the matches that were...
