    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 16, 2017

New Medical Lake Mayor Shirley Maike will take the lead on a largely new City Council in 2018. The 20-year council member maintained the lead she earned on the Nov. 7 election night and will move one seat to the left on the dais to replace John Higgins, the retiring three-term mayor. She will lead a council that has three new faces, the make-up of that still, perhaps in flux. “I think people have realized the city has been in good hands for the last 12 years under Mayor (...

1 Years Ago Nov. 15, 2007 Public works director Don MacDonald said that the test boring results from the new No. 8 Well in Cheney revealed it merits further development as a groundwater well. The ideal location for the pump was between 290 to 455 feet below the ground surface level. Chris "Billy Bon" Covington, a human resources/management major at Eastern Washington University, out ate four other competitors by pounding down four and a half pitas (which weighed about 16...

  • FDA can help vulnerable patients take 'last-resort' medications

    PETER J. PITTS|Updated Nov 16, 2017

Imagine you’re diagnosed with a rare cancer. There are no FDA-approved treatments. But after frantically searching the internet, you discover hopeful news — a pharmaceutical company is developing a possible cure. Unfortunately, the drug is in the early stages of development. It’s not FDA approved — at least not yet. There’s no guarantee the medicine will work. There might even be serious, unknown side effects. But, of course, you’re eager to try it — the alternative is certain death. The good news is that under current law,...

  • Residents asked to 'Remember 1993' when looking at election results

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated Nov 16, 2017

Twenty-five years ago, business took a beating in Olympia. The swing to the left in the 1992 general election was swift and potent. It drove higher costs to employers and more government regulations. Warning: Today’s political winds are blowing in that same direction. In the 1992 election, Democrats across America scored big wins promising a new health care system and bigger government. Bill Clinton upset George H.W. Bush for president and Congressman Mike Lowry knocked off R...

  • It is the most wonderful time of the year

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Nov 16, 2017

It just blows my mind that a week from today is Thanksgiving. This year has flown by. But I am also very excited as it is one of my favorite times. My family and I don’t have too many traditions but last year was the first year we did the Turkey Trot at Cheney High School and we plan to continue it this year. We also have found the Holy Grail in dinners at Cracker Barrel in Coeur D’Alene, which offers “bake at home” food and cater Thanksgiving meals. So that means we do not have to bake, clean dishes or stress about having...

  • Bus service changes coming

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 16, 2017

The most visible sign of what is taking place to improve transit operations in the Spokane area, and specifically on the West Plains, is the earth being moved along Interstate 90 at Exit 272. That's where the new $10 million West Plains Transit Center is being constructed and set to open in 2018. It's behind the scenes, however, where most of the changes are taking place, but not without plenty of input Karl Otterstrom, director of planning and development for the Spokane...

  • Bus service changes coming

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 16, 2017

Depending which option is selected, Cheney residents and Eastern Washington University students will see some definite changes in bus service in late 2018. Representatives from Spokane Transit Authority outlined those changes at the Cheney Planning Commission’s monthly meeting Nov. 13. The changes are part of STA’s “Moving Forward Plan” that began in earnest last year with the passage of Proposition 1 by county residents. The proposition raised the sales tax 2/10ths of 1 percent to pay for more than 25 regional transpo...

With their meeting punctuated by a presentation from the Spokane Transit Authority on service updates (see accompanying story) for the future, the council was told of pending changes and enhancements to bus service in the community. Notable during the regular business portion of the meeting were planned public hearings — a...

At the rate site crews are moving, there soon won't be any ground to break.
