  • Cardinals 'turn over' football victory to Stags

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

It was one of those contests where the final score certainly did not indicate how really close this final Northeast A League football game was, or could have been. Deer Park's 41-13 win on Oct. 26 at Holliday Field that concluded the regular season for each team, got out of hand on three plays that yielded the Stags 20 points in all of about 30 seconds. Sean Hill's 53-yard interception return broke a scoreless tie with 6 minutes, 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter for...

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Nov 1, 2018

It may not be the result the Cheney High cross country program was looking forward to this season, but the results from last Saturday’s glue-in meet between the Great Northern League and Central Washington Athletic Conference were good results nonetheless. All three Blackhawks runners advanced to 2A state competition this Saturday at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course. SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

The Lady Blackhawks varsity soccer team finished second in their regular season, dominating both Pullman and Clarkton in the District 7 2A playoffs but coming up short against East Valley in the Great Northern League Championship Tuesday night. The team controlled the field early in the match against Pullman (3-12-1, 1-11), scoring four goals in the first half — two from junior defender and forward Mackenzie Huotari and two from sophomore midfielder Makenna Benson. The pair of early goals from Huotari set the tone for the e...

  • Eastern Washington tries to stay perfect against Northern Colorado

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

Eastern Washington puts its perfect record of nine consecutive football wins in Big Sky Conference play against Northern Colorado on the line in Greeley this Saturday. The Eagles have yet to lose to the Bears since UNC joined the league in 2006. They will do that with a lock-tight defense that is as stingy as any in EWU football history, and an offense that appears to be blooming again under the guidance of quarterback Eric Barriere when the Eagles venture onto Nottingham...

  • Pullman ends Cheney's playoff hopes, 59-28

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Nov 1, 2018

Cheney High’s dreams of a post-season football tournament trip died last Friday night in Pullman — thanks to the arm of quarterback Konner Kinkade. Kinkade threw six touchdown passes, four in a 42-point first half, as the Greyhounds snatched the Great Northern League’s No. 2 playoff spot with a 59-28 win over the Blackhawks. Cheney fell behind 42-7 at the break, and although they whittled Pullman’s lead to 24 with two scores in the third quarter, could get no closer. The Greyhounds opened a 21-0 lead before the Blackha...

Using a gut-check finish where key runners overtook their opposition in the final 100 yards, the Cardinals earned a runner-up finish on the rainy fairways of the Chewelah Golf and Country Club and once...

While there is a “For Sale” sign posted out front, officials with Bi-Mart say they have no plans to leave Cheney. Travelers on First Street lately may have noticed the sign outside the popular business located north of Yoke’s. The Eugene, Oregon-based company built the building and located to Cheney over 10 years ago. The 34,950 square foot building is listed as being for sale for $3.5 million on the website loopnet.com. City Administrator Mark Schuller said the building is owned by B.A. Elk Grove, LLC, which is listed with...

  • Cheney council OK's increased cost of electrical transmission study

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Nov 1, 2018

An electrical transmission system study, compost and taxes were also subjects taken up by the Cheney City Council at its Oct. 23 meeting. The council found itself in the unusual position of having to approve a contract originally OK’d by Mayor Chris Grover under the small contracts agenda item back in April. Grover originally signed off on an Avista Utilities study of Cheney’s electrical transmission system at a then-estimated price of $5,000. Council approved a resolution several years ago that allows the mayor to agree to...

  • Brown won't screen constituents questions

    Updated Nov 1, 2018

I have tried to be open minded and evaluate the candidates for Congress from the 5th Congressional District in a reasonable manner. In addition to extensive research, I have attended live town hall meetings for both candidates. I also participated in three telephone town hall meetings with Cathy McMorris-Rodgers. During my last telephone event with CMR, I was thrilled to be selected to ask her a question on the air. Unfortunately, in order to ask a question, I was required to share it with her staff person first. You know...

  • Brown will not eschew science in decisions

    Updated Nov 1, 2018

Once again, Cathy McMorris Rogers is attempting to lower the allowable PCB pollution standards for the Spokane River. Does the importance of our river’s health vary depending on which party is in power? Apparently so…especially if it’s the GOP. Protecting and valuing earning capacities of businesses rather than environmental considerations is the GOP method of operation. Under Obama, the EPA set the higher standard at seven parts per quadrillion. This standard, embraced by environmental groups, the state’s native tribes...
