A 53-year-old male was arrested on the 2800 block of 1st Street on a Spokane warrant for first-degree trafficking in stolen property.     1 Years Ago Aug. 27, 2009 Medical Lake police officer Chris Johnston was honored with a pair of awards for his efforts to rescue residents of a home that caught fire June 27.     One hundred fifty years ago in 1869, Thomas A.E. Philleo homesteaded southeast of Cheney near the lake that bears his name. He had spent the winter in Oregon, returning with a herd of cattle that established his herd. He also sold some of those cattle to the military who were stationed in the area.     James (Jim) Preble, 74, of Cheney, died unexpectedly on Aug. 12. He was born in Minnesota, moving to Casper, Wyoming when he was in his early teens. He was active in scouting, Eagle Scout, and an accomplished rock climber in an era of very sketchy equipment. He worked as a surveyor while pursuing a degree in civil engineering at the University of Wyoming, where he met his wife Kathy of almost 51 years.     Gene Emil Bloom Bloom, Gene Emil, April 23, 1945 – Aug. 18, 2019. Gene was born in Minot, N.D. to Vern and Alice Bloom. Gene grew up on a dairy farm outside of Garrison, N.D. with his older brother, Ron. He graduated from Garrison High School in 1963. After graduation, Gene went to the North Dakota State School of Science, in Wahpeton, N.D. where he graduated with a two-year degree in auto mechanics.
