  • Mill reflects on history of Amber, Wash., originally settled by the Calverts

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Aug 21, 2014

Ron Mill has many memories of his growing up in Amber, Wash. When he was only 5 years old, the district encouraged all parents to have their children vaccinated. Ron doesn't remember what it was for exactly. When you read what happened to him, you will understand why he chose to forget. Several kids in the school and others who should have known better, teased Ron by telling him the needle for the vaccination was five feet long. Ron decided that he didn't need such a horrible...

  • Journalists stick to sidelines but sometimes get thrown into heat of stories

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 21, 2014

One of the first things you learn as a reporter is not getting directly involved with the story you are covering. This is easy, especially when it comes to sports. Other than taking a couple of steps into the end zone in hopes of snapping a few photos of a touchdown — as long as one of the referees isn’t screaming at me or a group of 22 football players are running in my direction — we tend to stick to the sidelines or the warm comfort of the press box. When we’re covering a story — particularly an event — we mainly obse...

This past weekend I was surprised to see over 600 women from all over the Inland Northwest — along with their families and friends — at the park, just as the sun was coming up, for this year’s WunderWoman triathlon, on Sunday, Aug. 17. The triathlon began with the Olympic Distance competitors swimming 1,200 meters in the lake. The second leg of the race was a 40K bike...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 21, 2014

Beau Baldwin dug out his insurance policy last Saturday and got a good look at its coverage. For his football team that is. In the Eagles final scrimmage at Roos Field, the Eastern Washington head football coach put the players to work who would be his insurance should something happen to starters. He seemed to like what he saw as backup quarterback Jordan West helped the offensive side of the ball roll up seven scores and 472 yards. "I was generally pleased with the big plays...
