  • Delegating application authority

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Aug 18, 2017

Cheney’s City Council could consider an ordinance that relinquishes some of its rights to prior approval of grant applications by department staff. During the resolutions section of the Aug. 8 meeting, Mayor Tom Trulove asked the council to possibly reconsider its current practice of granting approval to staff before applying for grants. Some of the grants coming before the council are for small dollar amounts, such as several parks and recreation department applications approved in April valued at $300 and $500. Other g...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Aug 17, 2017

1 Years Ago Aug. 16, 2007 Medical Lake School District accepted a $202,404 bid from Granite Petroleum Incorporated to build a 12,000-gallon above ground fuel tank for the district's bus garage. The Federal Aviation Administration dedicated a new traffic control tower at Spokane International Airport. The 271-foot, $29.8 million tower replaced the airport's original 70-foot control tower, dedicated in 1960. About 150 firefighters and 50 trucks were involved in combating fires...

  • Cheney jobs only going to EWU students

    Updated Aug 17, 2017

I’m a transplant to Cheney having moved here 24 years ago to attend Eastern. After graduating I got a few jobs in Spokane but I really want to just work in Cheney. Problem is, most Cheney businesses hire mostly college kids and not us experienced seniors. I know the college kids need jobs, too, and are more “computer savvy” than I am. I keep taking computer classes and am teachable. But, how can I compete with the kids? How can a senior get a job here in Cheney? Tami Leigh Cheney...

  • Is there a peaceful way to end North Korea's nuclear threat to the U.S.?

    Dr. STEPHEN SCHWALBE, Contributor|Updated Aug 17, 2017

North Korea’s successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland has resulted in considerable discussion around the planet. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping announced earlier this week that China’s de-escalation plan for the Korean Peninsula could start with the cancellation of large-scale exercises and North Korea’s ballistic missile testing program and lead to multilateral talks. Previous U.S. presidents have tried various approaches to end N...

  • No intimidation observed at council meeting

    Updated Aug 17, 2017

In response to Ted Olson’s letter to the editor on Aug. 2, I attended the City Council meeting and at no time did the City Administrator, Doug Ross, or the Mayor, John Higgins, intimidate Councilwoman Jessica Roberts. The meeting was cordial and respectful as always; nothing was said or done to boost anyone’s ego. The entire council meeting is tape recorded and the tape will show there was no bullying against anyone. In my opinion, all of this stems from the primary election. I have lived in Medical Lake over 30 years and...

  • Some things to consider when getting ready to head to college

    STACEY MORGAN FOSTER, Contributor|Updated Aug 17, 2017

Summer is ending, and the start of another college year is just around the corner. Now is the critical time to take care of important tasks to ensure a successful launch. If you are heading out for college for the first year, it is not too late to make these preparations — and parents, take note. Moving into the residence hall will be less stressful if you approach it from a minimalist perspective. You need basic clothing, bedding, hygiene products and school supplies (including computer). It may surprise you to know that you...

  • Now more than ever, America needs our help

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Aug 17, 2017

The past few days have been extra saddening for the United States. I usually do not like to talk about negative things happening, but it has gotten to a point that it needs to be discussed and people need to be informed. For those who do not know what happened in Charlottesville, Va. last weekend, there was a protest about the city officials planning on taking down a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. White supremacists, neo-Nazi groups and hateful protesters lined the streets of the town. There was a group of...

  • CMA launches group's new website

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 17, 2017

The old fashioned telephone book is no longer the source of information it once was. Certain other online avenues are only as good as the input and information they contain. The newly launched Cheney Merchant's Association website plans to be the place - locally at least - where both residents and visitors can find information they need on businesses and organizations. The page has been under construction for several months as the merchant's group sought to do a more thorough...

  • Leap of faith pays off for ML Pizza Factory owners

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 17, 2017

The old adage about when one door closes another opens may have never been a more appropriate connection for Medical Lake Pizza Factory owners Jason and Kristin Rodney. The couple, who recently celebrated their two-year anniversary as owners of the business on Aug. 16, saw one business opportunity fade away, but arguably a better one present itself almost immediately. "We were buying a hardware store in Oregon, we made a down payment on it, we sold our rental house and unfortu...

The Cheney School District board of directors unanimously approved, at a special meeting Aug. 9, the education specifications for renovation and expansion work at the district’s high school. Funding for the estimated $35.2 million project was part of the $52 million district-wide capital facilities bond approved by voters in February. • Safe viewing of rare solar eclipse

    SCOTT BORGHOLTHAUS, Contributor|Updated Aug 17, 2017

On Aug. 21, we will experience a phenomenon that comes around only once every 100 years or so, a solar eclipse visible in Cheney. While this may be neat to see, don't look at it unless you have the proper safety lenses that block out the sun's deadly rays. The reason is because the sun's intensity when viewed directly, even for a few seconds, can not only make vision painful; they can also permanently blind you. It's because the eye focuses light like a magnifying glass onto...

  • Airway Heights council discusses recreation center

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Aug 17, 2017

At the Aug. 14 study session meeting, Airway Heights council discussed the funds for the future recreation center. There were only two council members that showed up, making it not an “executive” meeting as there needs to be at least four members present. J.C. Kennedy, the parks and recreation director, briefly went over the issues that have come up in the recreation center. The Lydig ALSC team, who Airway Heights chose to build the center, is in the process of validation for the proposal that they submitted, which will be...

  • Monday's celestial view of a lifetime

    John McCallum|Updated Aug 17, 2017

While it’s not complete totality, the 91 percent coverage that Cheney and the rest of the Spokane area will experience during the Aug. 21 solar eclipse is pretty close. At least that’s what Eastern Washington University student Jason Schriver thinks, and he and the rest of the EWU astronomy club are offering residents a chance to view the eclipse safely. The club is holding a viewing party at the Inferno at Roos Field this Monday, with gates from the upper level P12 parking lot opening at 9 a.m. Schriver, the club’s secre...

  • Four Lakes facility to add storage

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 17, 2017

Two years ago concrete silos were sprouting up in Four Lakes at the Highline Grain Terminal. In about six weeks the bumper crop from the 2017 wheat harvest is expected to be piled in temporary storage onsite, Keith Bailey, general manager and CEO of Ag Ventures said. The idea of adding ground storage was in the plans from the very beginning. "We just didn't know whether it would be right away or not," Bailey said, adding the first one should start filling in September. Because...
