  • Knocking off Sam Houston would be big for Eagles

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Aug 14, 2014

One of the best football analogies I've ever heard came from Eastern Washington University head coach Beau Baldwin at last Thursday morning's West Plains Chamber of Commerce breakfast held outdoors next to the red rug at Roos Field. Baldwin equated the pre-season practice grind to the 1993 movie "Groundhog Day" in which actor Bill Murray keeps repeatedly waking up at 6 a.m. to find he's still in Punxsatawney, Penn. and it's still Feb. 2. As someone who's experienced a small...

  • Eastern tops voting in Sports Network poll

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 14, 2014

For the past few years, Eastern Washington has lived in the shadow of three-time defending Football Championship Subdivision champ North Dakota State. With a recent habit of making deep runs in the FCS playoffs the past two years, the Eagles may have begun to emerge from the Bison’s shadow. The Eagles, led by a trio of national awards candidates, have been selected No. 1 by The Sports Network in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision preseason poll of sportswriters, b...

  • Response to LaForge's column about censorship

    Updated Aug 14, 2014

Regarding John LaForge’s column regarding censorship of the use of American atomic bombs on Japan in 1945, he got it tactically correct, but strategically wrong. The atomic bombs were used strictly for strategic reasons. Let me explain. At the Tehran Conference in November 1943, the Allies agreed that the Soviet Union (i.e., Stalin) would attack Japanese forces in Manchuria on Aug. 9, 1945 — which it did. However, by then, we did not need the Soviet’s help against Japan, but an agreement was made and kept. So, we wante...

  • Fear prevents us from facing our country's challenges

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Aug 14, 2014

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” Plato, Greek philosopher, 427 – 347 B.C. “Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” Ralph Waldo Emerson, U.S. poet, essayist and lecturer, 1803-1882. I never realized how fearful a culture we have become until I left for a while. To be sure, there are things to be afraid of in our country, especially on a personal level. But for the most part, much of what we’re afraid of we shouldn...

  • Community loses activist and former museum director

    Updated Aug 14, 2014

Mary Jane Booth passed away Sunday, Aug. 10. She is remembered as a driving force on a number of community actions, and as a 56-year member of the Tilicum Club and the Cheney Historical Museum. Mary Jane had a way of cajoling people to volunteer in activities and organizations with humor, a touch of guilt, and persuasion. She was never shy about offering suggestions or her opinion, and she was a positive force for change in those organizations, from the Faculty Wives Club, Tilicum Club, Cheney Gun Club, to the Friends of...

  • Big or small, gratitude leaves footprints in society

    Updated Aug 14, 2014

A.A. Milne, author of “Winnie the Pooh” wrote, “Piglet noticed that even though he had a very small heart, it could hold a rather large amount of gratitude.” As much as “Winnie the Pooh” has its origin as a children’s story, it wouldn’t hurt for everyone to go back and re-learn the lessons the friendly yellow bear and his friends taught us when we were younger. In light of recent events, a focus on August’s PACE character trait “gratitude” seemed fitting. PACE defines gratitude as “feeling and expressing thankful app...

  • Chilly, slippery adventures kill time without power, take us back to the olden days

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Aug 14, 2014

My name is Lillie. My friend is Sue. She is visiting me from her home in Nebraska. We sat at the kitchen table, my friend and I, watching the afternoon slide by as its hours and minutes faded into nothing. Like many others in the area, our electricity had been tangled by an angry wind crashing into cars, uprooting trees, smashing windows and roofs of wounded houses. Crews were working frantically to restore the power. We’d have to be patient. Sue shrugged her shoulders. “I expected to do my laundry today. Maybe I should go...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Aug 14, 2014

In Hughes' case, add don't file it away; share it. That's the emphasis behind the Little Free Library Hughes and husband Jim built and maintain at the end of the driveway at their home at 17912 S. Lois Drive. According to its website, the Little Free Library organization's mission is to "promote literacy and love of...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 14, 2014

Sunset Elementary students who cross the intersection on 12th Avenue to get to school may notice changes on corners of both Lawson and King streets. The city of Airway Heights finished installing the pedestrian-activated flashing stop signs on the corners of King and Lawson. The stop signs were just one several new sidewalk improvements that was funded by the Safe Routes for Sunset grant. The signs work when a pedestrian is about to cross the intersection. They push a button that triggers flashing lights at each sign. Along...

  • Cheney water passes annual testing

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Aug 14, 2014

When it’s in good supply — which is most of the time — Cheney’s drinking water continues to be some of the cleanest water around. According to the city’s 2013 Annual Consumer Confidence Report, Cheney’s water tested below maximum contaminant level goals established by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as well as state goals, including contaminants produced as a by-product of water disinfection processes. Some contaminants such as lead were undetected in the water samples collected. Public Works director Todd Ablema...

  • 'Dr. A' left his mark at Eastern Washington

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 14, 2014

He weathered the storm of the nation's worst recession and successfully piloted the Eastern Washington University ship through rough waters. The school now has record enrollment and national notoriety on many fronts. Perhaps bigger yet, in the midst of serving as EWU's 25th president, Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo waged, and so far has won the personal battle with a deadly form of cancer. Now it's time for Arévalo, and his wife, Nadine, to turn the pages on eight memorable years of l...
