  • Eastern Washington has an exciting football season ahead

    GRACE POHL, Staff Intern|Updated Jul 26, 2018

Even though I may not be in Cheney when Eastern Washington University football is kicked off, I am really excited for this season. College football season is the best time of the year in sports and I look forward to it every year. Nothing beats those Saturdays where you just watch football all day long. Last season stung a little bit as EWU barely missed the playoffs and the University of Tennessee had their worst football year. But this is a fresh start for both teams. I can’t wait for the first Eastern game as they take o...

The schedule was announced by the league on July 24, and includes 20 conference games for the first time since the 2013-14 and 2012-13 seasons. • Cathy McMorris Rodgers represents ME

    Updated Jul 26, 2018

I am a working mother, wife, and city council woman. Cathy McMorris Rodgers represents ME on many fronts. She co-sponsored the bill that extended the Federal Perkins Loan program for need-based students. Without programs like this, our son would not be able to afford college in two years. She supported and had language in the recent Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that puts more money in my pocket each month to help provide for my family, expands the child credit and doubles the standard deduction. I’m actually looking forward to f...

  • Fearful for the survival of Democracy

    Updated Jul 26, 2018

If you read the actual transcripts of Trump and Putin’s press conference following the Helsinki Summit, the first thing that may occur to you is that President Trump cannot express a coherent thought. The second, and by far the more troubling realization, is that the President of the United States just gave away the farm, and I’m not talking about his trade wars. Donald Trump, who fancies himself a strong-man leader, abased himself before the Russian tyrant and in doing so, trashed America’s intelligence, law enfor...

  • The children in the United States are our future now

    FRANK WATSON, Contributor|Updated Jul 26, 2018

My niece and nephew recently came to visit from the Midwest. They had never seen this part of the world, and I thought they would be impressed with the variety of ecosystems in Eastern Washington. Thus, I was a bit surprised when their initial request was to take a ride in “Uncle Frank’s snazzy convertible.” We mounted up, and I was about to start the engine when they asked for help with their seat belts. These kids, ages five and nine, were conditioned to buckle up before the car was put in motion. I was impressed with...

  • Amazon replacing libraries is ridiculous

    GRACE POHL, Staff Intern|Updated Jul 26, 2018

Everyone probably knows by now that Amazon is coming to the West Plains area – unless you are living under a rock. But that isn’t the real reason why I bring up the powerhouse company. On Saturday, July 21, Forbes posted quite the controversial article with the headline “Amazon Should Replace Local Libraries to Save Taxpayers Money.” Yikes. The backlash from the article was so extreme that Forbes actually deleted the piece from online. So if you go on their website, you cannot read the actual article anymore. This is how a r...

  • Rascal Rodeo provides 'can-do' experience

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 26, 2018

Over three dozen members of the special needs community in the area had their special day prior to the final performance of the 51st annual Cheney Rodeo on July 15. The Rascal Rodeo made its appearance at the Bi Mart Arena just before the sun began to seriously bake the dirt and the smiles were easy to spot - from participants, parents and caregivers. The Rascal Rodeo idea is that of Tri-Cities resident Ann-Erica Whitemarsh. At an early age she befriended a Down Syndrome boy....

Paula Clouse, the representative that served on the committee for Stratford Suites, stepped down as the general manager. Beck had then filled out an application for the council to consider. On July 2, Beck attended the committee’s meeting, but there was no quorum so it was not official, but Councilman Dave Malet and Kennedy showed her a b...

  • Amazon makes it all official

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 26, 2018

Arguably one of the worst-kept secrets in the local business world charged into the open last Friday. That’s when Amazon pulled the thinly-veiled curtain back on Project Rose, now officially known as the online giant’s latest fulfillment center which will be built along Interstate 90 and Geiger Blvd. A massive earth moving project has been in progress at the site for over a month for what will ultimately be a four-story, 2.5 million square-foot facility, initially tar...
