    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

Tucked away in a mobile home park off of Sunset Highway in Airway Heights, a drama worthy of a telenovela has quietly been playing out since late June, expanding to involve city departments, local officials and residents alike. What started as a routine code enforcement call has rapidly turned into a quagmire of issues code enforcement officer Kristina Blake says highlights the need for additional city code detailing rental inspection rules. Essentially uninhabitable Last mont...

    Updated Jul 25, 2019

On behalf of the 24-Hour Tennis-a-Thon committee, we would like to thank our sponsors, our volunteers, and the communities of Medical Lake, Airway Heights, Cheney, and Spokane. The Medical Lake Community Outreach Program and the Medical Lake Food Bank benefited from the generous donations of many local businesses. Without the support from these local businesses, the end product of our fundraiser would not be possible. The love and support given to the community of Medical Lake is and always has been unending and is greatly...

  • A war with Iran can and should be avoided

    Updated Jul 25, 2019

Every day, the United States and Iran continue to move closer to war. As tensions escalate between our nations, the risk grows of accidents and miscalculations tipping us into another deadly conflict in the Middle East. I am particularly concerned by casual talk about a so-called “limited military strike” that could be carried out at an “acceptable” human cost. In truth, there is no such thing as a quick and painless war — not for any side in a conflict. An American attack against Iran will lead to incalculable death, de...

  • Sowing the seeds of hate in the USA

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

A recent Washington Post analysis of a University of North Texas study found a 226 percent increase in reported hate crimes in counties where President Donald Trump held a rally compared to those where he didn’t. Few escape his verbal hate speech — Mexicans, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Muslims, Jews, immigrants; women and gold star military families. Even people with disabilities are a target. But is there a correlation between the president, who cam...

  • Annexation a win-win for Medical Lake, Spokane Fire District 3

    Updated Jul 25, 2019

After working for Spokane County Fire District #3 from 1981-2016, I believe the annexing of the two departments together is a positive move for the citizens of both entities. It would fiscally impossible for the city of Medical Lake to provide the equal resources that Fire District 3 can offer to the city due to its size and assets. Medical Lake offers a population base to recruit volunteers from as well as a group of highly trained and dedicated volunteers and some firefighting equipment/facilities. Finding volunteers today...

  • American Legion AA Medical Lake Post 196 closes the season in the the dark in Kettle Falls

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

Perhaps it was a bad omen when the umpires arrived an hour late. Whatever the reason, the American Legion AA Medical Lake Post 196 crew finished their season with a two-game make-up doubleheader at Kettle Falls that ended in a double loss. Pitcher Denton Deal "had his worst outing of the year," head coach Jefferson French said of game one. "He wasn't able to find the strike zone," French said. "And when he did they hit him pretty well." The first game went to Kettle Falls...

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

The Spokane American Legion Cannons Senior ended their season with a tough loss in the first game of loser-out league playoffs at home against the Bandits at Shadle Park Thursday, July 18. In a back-and-forth game that was tied going into a no-hit sixth inning, the Bandits brought in two runners in the top of the seventh, which the Cannons couldn't answer despite out hitting the bandits six to five in the game. The Cannons drew first blood, holding the Bandits scoreless in...

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

The business has been integral to the social fabric of Medical Lake for nearly a quarter century, and while Denny’s Harvest Foods isn’t going anywhere, the owner, Kathy McDaniel, a slight woman with short, sandy-blond hair, gray eyes and glasses, is moving on. She and her late husband, Denny, the business’s namesake, had been working for several months in 2017 preparing to sell and retire when his untimely death radically changed McDaniel’s life. “We were in the process o...

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

The Cheney School Board is bracing itself for an onslaught of new students in the coming years as it heard details on a new enrollment report at its July 17 meeting. The report indicates the district may be facing a student population of nearly 10,000 by 2029, a prospect that Superintendent Rob Roettger joked was “just a little scary.” The report is still being completed and Roettger said more information for students and families would be available next week. The board also unanimously approved revisions to district policy N...

  • Tennis-a-Thon brings in thousands

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

The 22nd annual 24 Hour Tennis-a-Thon was by all accounts another success this year as volunteers, coaches, players and participants came out to hit some balls, receive some lessons, and raise money for the Medical Lake Food Bank, Medical Lake Outreach Center and Medical Lake High School tennis teams. “We’ve been out here for 24-hours or close to it,” volunteer Rob Haugen said on Thursday morning, July 18, as the event approached its conclusion. He estimated that close to 70...

The Cheney building official who discussed the role and duties of building inspectors should have been attributed to Public Works Manager Shane Nilles....

  • CEOs address WP needs

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Jul 25, 2019

When it comes to business on the West Plains, chief executive officers of three long-time area employers told a large audience at the July 17 West Plains Chamber of Commerce’s monthly breakfast that it was location that brought them there — and it was location that was a main concern of theirs for the foreseeable future. By location, Zak Designs’ Irv Zakheim, Pearson Packaging Systems’ Mike Senske and DAA Northwest Bob McConkey meant infrastructure — access to transport...

  • ML Council extends planning contract

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 25, 2019

Attendance was back to normal – that is, low – for the July 16 Medical Lake City Council meeting, as members, absent Councilwoman Jessica Roberts, heard two presentations and addressed some minor business issues before going into executive session for litigation reasons. A planning commission position vacant for weeks was filled by longtime resident Marye Jorgenson by unanimous approval by the council. The council also approved an on-call contract, not to exceed $12,500, wit...
